  1. Just my personal opinion, but this sounds goofy to me. If the goal of pitch count rules is to save the kids' arms, what difference does it make if he doesn't throw pitches?
  2. NIH ("Not Invented Here") - basically an attitude of "we can do better". I do like what USSSA does, for instance. They use OBR, but with exceptions. That keeps them from diverging too much.
  3. NFHS Rule 2-4-3: So they make it easy. If he throws a pitch, it counts.

    Re-entry

I tried that. http://umpire-empire.com/index.php?/topic/66592-pitch-counts/ Hasn't gotten much response yet.
  5. For what it's worth, I took that sentence just to be "this guy really does know what he's doing - it's not a matter of him being in over his head". And yes, you (the OP) were right to leave this alone unless asked.
  6. My state just released their rules on pitch counts. I'm just curious how it compares to other states (or whether others have even released their rules yet). http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Baseball/PDF/PitchCountRule.pdf
  7. As the parent of kids aged 16, 18, and 20. I can tell you it only gets worse. If you're looking strictly at cost savings, send them to an orphanage on their 13th birthday.
  8. One thing I've done (in case it helps anybody else here): just as a matter of personal policy, I don't make a deposit until I've recorded all the pay, mileage, and any other relevant data on my "income & expenses" spreadsheet. Makes it a lot easier when tax time comes around.
  9. You mean like the one I mentioned earlier? I've seriously considered it. I haven't because tactile feedback I consider to be one of the best things you can do, and that's tricky on mobile devices. But it would be nice to have it "programmable" so you could have strike-first or ball-first, 4-ball and 3-strike or 3-ball and 2-strike, or even a scorekeeper and timeclock.
  10. It's a most disheartening feeling thinking "OK, catcher, you should be moving your glove in now. Now. NOW!"
  11. I treat it like every other game. ...which means I'm getting on them to hustle. Unless they're really bad, nearly all of my games with a time limit get in all of their innings, because I discourage dawdling (time limit or not).
  12. Yeah, I know. But I figure I'm probably not alone. If you've got to do it, a notched indi-clicki-counter* is the way to go. *Just in case I haven't triggered enough people with my first post.
  13. I second (or third, or ...) the All-Star. Matter of fact, if you click that link, you'll see the review I entered at UA - again assuming you like 3-2, with strikes on the thumb. I work a lot of games where I'm expected to keep the count when on the bases, and having the notched indicator so I can "feel" the count, rather than see it means I can always know the count without having to take my eyes off the action.

    Avoiding contact?

You're absolutely correct, R(base number) is easier and clearer, and everybody uses it ... except NFHS's materials which use R1 to be the runner who is on base first, R2 the runner behind R1, etc. I wish NFHS would use the same system that the rest of the civilized world does, but wishing doesn't do me any good.
  15. I'm not a "softball guy" either (so take my statements with that caveat), but I do remember reading that in softball, that is true - that touching a base is a safe haven for being hit by a batted ball, unless there's intentional interference.
  16. To expound... Any time a batter swings and it hits him before hitting the bat, it's a dead ball strike. It's not uncaught, because the ball is dead. Therefore the batter is out.
  17. If you've ever been a regular church attender, the Babylon Bee is an amazing site.
  18. Great experience with @harrisonj23. Product was exactly as advertised and shipped the same day I paid. Even had a nice conversation with him when I contacted him about the gear. (...and I now have my first Force3 equipment - hooray!)
  19. Good gracious - when you step on home plate, is there any white visible???
  20. Only because you're too skinny.
  21. In our league, the only criteria is "2 years older than the players", so 10 years old for 8u, 14 years old for 12U, etc. Granted, it's only a rec league, but it seems to work well for us.
  22. Just get the shirts. Use these for patches, if they need to be different.
  23. In fairness, @noumpere's was funnier in context.
  24. Makes you think about what's really important. I hope the MLB says "take all the time you need".
  25. Speaking of amateur games, it goes the other way, too. A few years ago, I was listening to a radio broadcast of a local high school football game, as I was driving to the game. Here was the play call I remember: "Handoff up the middle. WHOA! Did you see that? That was amazing!" No. No, I couldn't see that, because it's radio. I wasn't sure if he scored or was tackled for a loss or ...?
