    Legal Pick-Off?

Ha, it's not just umpires that don't know this rule. Last year I had a former MLB pitcher arguing for a balk on this play. I couldn't be sure if he was just trying to take advantage of me or he really didn't know the rule. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  3. Let's start talking about when we will be working our first games again. I still have a double-header scheduled for May 24th. Be safe and stay healthy. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  4. I'm a "Super Slot" guy now that learned to umpire with a pillow and felt very comfortable with it at the time. At this point, it's been so long without it and everything I do has changed so much, I can't even imagine what it would be like to go back to the outside protector. Well, one thing you can count on happening. You and your partner would catch a ration of excrement from both dugouts. I had the pleasure of working the bases with a guy who insisted on using the outside protector for college summer ball last year [emoji3525] Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

  6. My self evaluations normally start with: Did I miss any strikes? Was I seeing the ball all the way? How was my timing? Did I hustle to the best possible position on every play? How was my communication and coordination with my partner? How well did I handle any situations that came up? Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

    Balk or NO Balk

I think Jim Evans balk video for OBR requires you to judge whether there was a "play" on if the throw goes to F3 off the bag. I would cite the violation of feinting to 1B as the reason for the balk in FED and OBR (3B included for OBR). That's exactly how Evans explained it. If you judged a play was on, it was not a balk. It was an attempt to retire the runner. It would be hard to convince me that F3 taking a throw 15' from the bag was making a play. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

  9. The picture@MadMax's posted shows the type of skull cap I prefer. Usually they are what a football player might wear under their helmet. Under Armour or Nike make most of them. The challenge is to find one with an unobtrusive logo. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  10. I'd like to hear what actually happens as guys from around the country start their seasons. So far so good but my first couple of HS games here in AZ have been with bigger programs with a bit more financial resources. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  11. I've been using a HSM for a long time. I tried to wear a 4 stich under my bucket but could never pull off a complete game of removing my helmet without disturbing my hat or glasses at some point. I went almost a year wearing a hat to the plate meetings and then leaving it in the fence. Lost too many hats! About 5 or 6 years ago I started wearing a black skull cap under my bucket to protect myself from the AZ sun on my bald head. I found that I liked the feel of a layer between my head and the helmet. In addition, the material seems to wick sweat. I wear a skull cap night or day game and the only time I have to remove it is for the anthem. I prefer a HSM because I believe it provides the best protection and visibility. The skull cap offers me the best compromise between proper appearance and functionality. 12. Yes! Problems solved for me. Thanks UIC Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  13. I've had the same issue for a while. Also the links in my email won't allow me to get to the forum in Taptalk either. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  14. I want to mention Jax's list doesn't distinguish a third choice. AZ is a Restict, Play and Report state. Bet teams won't go too long into the season without the proper baseballs if the HC is watching from the dugout. On the other hand, about game 5 I'm expecting some home team HC to drop a, "well we've played four games without them. How come your the only harda##" on me. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  15. In AZ we're playing the game, restricting the HC and reporting the team if they can't give us the correct baseballs. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  16. Yeah,@MadMax has been keeping busy working that commie kickball. He found me a sweet System Seven for like $25 that I love. Thanks buddy [emoji106] Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  17. 13U Triple Crown played under modified Fed rules. Bases empty, I'm in A. BR hits a little flair that F4 charges hard from deep to attempt to take in the air. F4 secures the ball in his glove while diving to the ground and apparently jamming his wrist. F4 is lying on the ground with the ball in his glove, (I think), also on the ground. I make no call. The BR passes 1B and turns immediately to run back to home. F4 pulls his hand out of his glove leaving the glove on the ground with the ball in it. I verbalize, "No Catch!". F1 reaches into F4's glove lying on the ground and and throws to F3 who tags the BR as he attempts to return to 1B from down the line between Home and 1B. Not a word from either team, but of course the parents had no idea what had happened. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

  19. Well here in the Phoenix area we work as much as we can stand. Fall and Spring are the busiest but there are games year round. @MadMax can tell you what he's doing with multiple sports but just baseball, I did about 300 games this year. That's around my regular job and my pickleball addiction. I've done as many as 600 games a year. My buddy from Tucson had a similar# of games but he had to take games here in the Valley to work that much. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  20. Welcome, MadMax and I are up in the Phoenix area and one of our buddies is just now in the process of moving up from Tucson. We'd be glad to help you any way we can. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

    AITA?

Perhaps some of us that have the choice of working or not working the small field games can feel good about choosing to not work them by recruiting and mentoring a few guys willing to work kids games. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

    Double Play

If R1 failed to execute a legal slide then he cannot do anything that hinders or impedes F6 in completing a possible double play. With that as the rule would you have interference? From your description, it sounds like an easy call. Also, please note that intent to interfere is not required. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  23. I always think, does he think I'm not seeing the same thing he's seeing or does he think I'm unaware of the balk rules? It pretty much has to be one or the other. At least you didn't just start yelling "balk"! If you feel like you have information the umpiring crew has to have you you might try asking; did he stop twice? If we are treated respectfully, the vast majority of umpires will give you a quick explanation of why it's not a balk or call it next time if we missed it. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk

    Legal Play or Balk

Funny, a couple of weeks ago I had a former MLB pitcher arguing with me about a pitcher stepping directly to 3rd to throw out a runner from 2nd who broke too soon. He insisted that F1 had to step off prior to throwing to 3rd. OBR, I told him that the step and throw to an unoccupied base was allowed when it was for the purpose of making a play on an advancing runner. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
  25. Max, You know how I feel about umpires like me who use a HSM. Nothing changes, it does not get put down ever. It is taken off and held in the left hand. It's not to be more pushed back on the top of your head. The only time I ever have an issue is when I have to put my skull cap back on after the National Anthem. I just ask my partner to hold my helmet for a moment while I put my skull cap back on. Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk
