  1. I in no way meant to be rude, just wondering if you were taught this or you "created" a signal for it?

No rudeness taken. I am here to learn!!!! And help when I can. I appreciate all feedback.

I learned my signals from a highly respected college guy. I learned a lot from him over the last couple of years but I guess this was not correct.

Maybe you could ask him to clarify what he told you. Sometimes things can get lost in translation. I get asked the wrong question all the time...locally people want to know about certain play, I tell them the rule, then find out later that they described the play incorrectly. Maybe that's what occurred here?

Maybe he was right and you misinterpreted what he told you. Maybe not? Just a thought because I've had that happened to me before too.

  2. I think they kicked that one. That would mean you call UI if you don't open the gate fast enough. I just can't believe they mean that. I can only assume they are still talking about the throw but it isn't worded well. I haven't read the Preseason Guide yet but I will try today.

Now I'm excited about reading the preseason guide. I can't think of a reason how they could get UI on a play like this.

  3. With

R1 at first and no outs, B1 swings and misses for strike one. While the pitch is in flight, someone in the offensive team’s dugout yells “runner.†F2 catches the pitch and immediately throws to second base. No fielder is in position to catch the throw and it goes into center field. R1, who was not running on the pitch, advances to second.

    Ruling for each code?

If the action had no impact on the play, you could probably use preventative officiating to work around it by warning with coaches that if it happens again that you could have interference (which I have not looked up yet, so I don't even know if its illegal), then so they quit doing it in other games just to see if we call it, I'd file an incident report with the state office just as a matter of information so there is a paper trail. (Assuming FED, and assuming that action is illegal)

  4. The Maximizing book by Jim Evans has 54 different umpire signals in it.

Jax, this is something that you could cover in your pre-game that would probably take under 1 minute.

"okay, situations with a runner on 3rd, less than two outs, I'll signal to you that I'm staying home. That means that I will be taking the tag up for the runner on third base. Sound like a plan?"

Or something like that. Again, in my mind, it shouldn't look like sign language out there. I be hard-pressed to think you'd find a reputable clinic that would ever teach an additional mechanic like the one you're using. If it works for you and that's what your evaluator (he who give you games - HWGYG) wants you to do, then you need to do it that way.

I promise, I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to help so you appear to be credible out there.

  5. The American public's perception of men with facial hair is that they're untrustworthy. Think about this: How many recently elected officials can you count with facial hair? Not many. That's been a given if you want to run for office for many years.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, ii just IS.

I'm surprised no one else has brought this up. It's nothing new.

That is a fantastic point. I didn't think of that. Best post of the day!!

  6. Boy, that's ("Dead Ball") just a bad mechanic...but if that's what they want you to say, I suppose you should do it. Just do it at any clinics you attend.

Good catch on the "Foul Ball" one. I wouldn't have known what to do! It is good for beginning umpires though, they simply might not know, but some of the mechanics in the FED book are j just bad mechanics.
