  1. I had a Honigs K94 mask. I really liked the shape of it. It is a touch bigger than the standard. I highly recommend this if you are in the market. It is not a featherweight but, it is significantly lighter than a Wilson Dyna Lite. Being a single bar the vision is very good. I wore it for the Fall season. The standard calf shin pads are nice. The only reason I sold it was I got a heck of a deal on an All-Star FM25TI. At one point this spring I had 7 masks. I sold 4 of them and I have only worn 2 this season.
  2. I once had a game on an open field with no fence and during the late innings and near dusk the outfield was taken over by a small herd of deer. Not nearly as concerning as a bear. We decided that we had played long enough and this was natures signal for us to go home. Besides the bugs were absolutely fierce on that night. I can't recal the teams or the score but, I remember the events outside of the game.
  3. JR: I like the improvements a lot. The best thing is that no one has one like it. It is an one of a kind. I wore my Douglas last night. I like the low profile and it provides great protection. I think that you will like this CP a lot. Everytime I wear mine I wonder why the Douglas CP is was not more popular when it was available on the retail market.
  4. Tonights game was a struggle (I hate scrimages. A new F1 and F2 every inning) but, I did have a parent coach say one of the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Runner on first with one out, 1-2 count batter swings at a curveball that hits the dirt in front of the plate, catcher misses the ball, I signal batter is out. Runner on first goes to second, batter runs to first. After the dust settles we send the BR off first as he was out. Coach from defense "Why is he out? Is it because he swung at a pich that bounced before the plate?" I explained the rule and then he then wanted us to send the runner back from second........oh man. So lets hear it with some more good ones.
  5. I have the All Star Ti and love it! I rank it right up there with WV Gold and NB450's as far as my favorite gear goes. Highly recommended.
  6. One hint if you are going to print this out. On the print menu under "Page Scaling" select "fit to Printable Area" It comes out much easier to read. It is still 130 pages but, the text will fill the page.
  7. Ozzie kicking the masks is the best!!!! Soto's reaction was great too! I am sure the PU couldn't understand a damm thing that Ozzie was saying. Maybe he can tryout for the Bears in the off season.
  8. Try this out. Can't say I have ever worn it but, the concept/principle works very well on my roof. Hopefully this one doesn't clog up with pine needles and oak leaves once a fall. http://www.sweatgutr...-sweatband.html IMO Being called "Gutter head" is an improvement over "Kotex head" as far a nick names go.
  9. This seems to be a common practice around here. Jason Varitek, Boston Red Sox catcher, does this often. The sucess rate at the levels I see is low and it is annoying. Only being 5'-8" if the catcher stands up I can't see a thing. A bigger pet peeve for me is the catchers that set up a foot and half outside and then stick a pitch that misses the plate by twelve inches. They want the strike because "he hit the spot".
  10. As if the the Big Swish needs another pimp. I have heard of taking off a logo that you are not being paid to wear but attaching a logo to someone elses product? This doesn't even make sense on any level.
  11. YOH: The game is over when you leave the field. That is in the rules. Your jurisdiction starts when you enter the field and it is over when you leave the field. Assuming that your League does not have some sort of crazy local rule that mandates you watch the post game parade or sign the scorebook before you are offically done. You are there to umpire. You are not there to participate in a reception line of glad handers and high fivers. This is going to bite you in your A$$ in a big way someday. Likely sooner rather than later. You are not only asking for it you are inviting it. As you do this awhile things will change. Somethings for the better and somethings for the worse. There are some folks out there that will take your extended presence on the field as a opportunity to "engage" you. In every game there is one side that is not happy, correctly or incorrectly, you may be the focus of thier blame. Your presence may actually inflame any situation. Umpires can be polarizing figures. Call the third out, get rid of the balls, gather up your patner and leave the field via safetest and the most direct route. If you pass folks be polite but keep moving. A quick nod and "Thanks" works well. Keep your head up and avoid direct eye contact. Typically, I can be most of the way to my car before they have cycled through the "Good game" line. Do not stop at the concession stand either. The free hot dog and soda can wait. If you leave promptly and there is something that happens after you are gone you can honestly say to the LD and the courts "I was off the field, I did not see it happen". They can want something more but, really there isn't anything else to give them. Let them sort this out on their own. Best of Luck.
  12. That's what I've been told .... it looks like a standard ribbed CP, but it's not .... I mean .... Tim Tschida wears one, among others... My question is more around the materials. This gear looks like it would be an absolute furnace. I am not saying it is, that is just how it looks to me.
  13. +1. It is so very simple. Saw a partner the other day with a blue bag and black hat wearing navy. Looked out of place. Yeah, your hat and ball bags definitely need to match. If you're wearing a black hat, it doesn't matter what shirt you're wearing, go with the black ball bags and vice-versa... Unless, of course, you're wearing one of these, then you just wear your favorite team's hat backwards... and all of your gear on the outside of your uniform so you can show it off to all the other Smitty's

  15. I tried one and like the others that have posted before me, I hated the pads. I would recommend the Allstar LUC pads as a nice fit on this frame. I wish the silver was available as a frame only. If you need to spend an additional $40-50 on a set of pads this is not a great values IMO. http://www.baseballplusstore.com/products/Allstar-pfm25luc-replacement-pad-for-fm25luc.html
  16. I would not call this a good deal. You can buy a brand new charcoal for about $20 more ($81) and it will be the new version not the old version. For that matter you can buy a new Platinum for $50 more and have something that you can wear at any level and never question if you have enough gear.
  17. Thinking about picking up a pair of these. Does any one have any feedback? I do mostly HS level ball with maybe some mens league mixed in. I presently have a pair of Honigs K2010-16. Thanks for your comments.
  18. Up to $421 and the reserve has not been met......

    Catcher Issue

Before the pitcher delivers the ball, the catcher will reach down and grab a handfull of dirt and put it in his/her mitt. Then they'll dump it out. When the pitcher delivers the pitch, a huge cloud of dust comes flying out of the mitt and directly into your eyes. Thanks, ...ok ... Roger, ... did this 'loading stuff' start AFTER your issue w/ the hidden ball trick? No. THe HBT was the second to last "play" of the game. A called thrid strike was the last play. The catchers team lost. The funniest part is that due to the superior protection of my Oakley's and his pitchers inability to hit the strike zone consistantly let alone high and inside with me in the slot, I would dare say that he ate more of that dust than I did. WHEN I see this team next year (and I will) I will watch for this and deal with it then. I wonder if he is playing Summer ball...........
  20. I have worn this mask in a rotation with my All Star TI all season. It is a very nice mask. Single bar frame with great visability. I have not been hit hard enough yet to have taken advantage of the design of the upper frame (It is curved to match the contour of the skull vs being flat) but I have taken a couple of decent shots and the mask has done its job very well. Light enough at 19 oz that I do not notice it. I will say the biggest surprice is the LUC pads (as TH pointed out they are the same pad my TI). I thought that I might not care for them. I was wrong. These are comfortable and cool. They dry quickly and are not at all "graqbby" on the beard. They have the right mix of stiffness and give to them if you know what I mean. If you have not seen it, the video testing on YouTube is very impressive and should give you confidence that this rig is designed and built right. I think that this mask retails for around $55 and I highly recommend it.
  21. If you are interested in this type of thing. I justr noticed that UmpAttire is closing out all of the All-Star FM-25TI masks for $159.99. I got mine earlier this spring and I absolutely love it. The biggest difference is the FM25-TI is a double bar. It weighs in at about 19 oz. and the mask is seemingly industructable.

    Catcher Issue

I thought about the scuffing thing but, that is not logical (as if a 7th grader think things through) as both pitchers used the same balls. Neither F1 was advanced enough to make use of a scuff. I thought that he might have been doing to irritate me but, he seem to be getting more of the dust in his face than I did.
  23. The other day I was behind the plate for a Jr HS game. The game went along very well and without note except for a botched hidden ball play. Offense wanted a balk, defense wanted an out and I still had not put the ball in play. After the game my partner says to me "did you notice the catcher loading his glove?" I was not familar with the term or the concept and asked him to clarify. He said that before a pitch the catcher would reach down and grab some dirt and put it in the glove o. Now the field was a already a dust bowl but I had not noticed anything too unusual. I was wearing wrap around sunglasses so the dust was not bothering me at all. Has anyone ever heard of this and for what purpose was he doing this? I am asking as I will likely have this same team next year and if he is doing something that needs to be taken care of I will do that. This team is from a community that has a reputation for pushing the boundries more than a bit
  24. This was not me. I typically do not do the "dance of pain". It is sort of a misguided and warped false sense of toughness on my part.
