  2. No run scores. No run scores when the third out is on any runner forced to advance by the batter becoming a runner (or on the runner before they reach first base). "Being forced" is a state of being for a runner and not how the out is made. In the posted situation, that runner tagged before reaching the next base is a "force out".

  3. I post this here, because it's a very good take (not perfect, but worth reading) and the article points to issues germane to the shortage of umpires. https://nypost.com/2024/08/29/sports/sports-tv-remains-bereft-of-dignity-and-common-sense/

  4. But when you become intimately familiar with the codes you find unfortunate wording that connects 1B to a force. There is also wording that has a runner returning to tag as being forced.

  5. Well, which is it? If A implies C and B implies C, does it follow that A = B? Not in this universe. Example: all dogs are mammals, and all cats are mammals, but dogs ≠ cats. Another: all 3rd outs at 1B prevent runs, and all 3rd-out force outs prevent runs, but 3rd outs at 1B ≠ 3rd-out force outs. Minimal familiarity with the definition of 'force play' should make it obvious why retiring the BR before he legally touches 1B cannot possibly be a force play, whether or not it's the 3rd out.

  6. Odd that his mask ain’t a Nike frame – Icon Ti, Icon Steel, or Teardrop. It’s a “typical” catcher’s frame, with the double-wire eyeport. Likely a FM25. While it’s rare to see TWs on a non-umpire frame, it’s not unheard of. Zorbium is much better than upholstery foam or gel foam. TW never offered (never even considered it) leather or vinyl, which was much more durable (and cheaper!) than t-fab. Of course, those more spartan materials were put into catcher’s masks because catchers masks end up in the dirt so much.

  7. SECTION 4 FORFEITED GAME No change. You've still got it. Welcome back. NFHS 4-3 ART. 1 . . . A game shall be forfeited to the offended team by the umpire when a team : is late in appearing or in beginning play after the umpire calls "Play." State associations are authorized to specify the time frame and/or circumstance before a forfeit will be declared for a late arrival by one of the teams; or refuses to continue play after the game has started; or delays more than a reasonable amount of time in resuming play, or in not obeying the umpire ' s order to remove a player for violation of the rules ; or persists in tactics designed to delay or shorten the game; or willfully and persistently violates any of the rules after being warned by the umpire; or is unable to provide at least nine players to start the game or cannot provide eight players to finish the game; or NOTES: 1. An out will be called each time that spot in the batting order comes to bat. If the offensive player must be substituted for after reaching base, the most recent bat- ter not on base is allowed to run for that player.

  10. Absolutely. The funnier scenario, to me, is if Jansen had hit that first strike for a home run back in June, and everything else transpired as it did, then Jansen would have had the game-winning RBI in a game where he was the last batter out for the losing team.
