  1. Mic/body cam the umpires? Ok fine with me. That also means fans and coaches appear on said body cam. I’m game. I wonder how quickly the winds would change….a guy can dream, right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  2. I'll self admit I jumped to the conclusions and had my witty retorts ready to go... Amygdala rightly shrunk, here is my thoughtful response... Significant dependency on many factors can contribute: 1) Humanity. (see Biles, Simone, a.ka. the Gymnastic G.O.A.T.). There is a high daily variability in people performance day to day (Seniors is 14-16 year olds? So hourly, if not minute by minute variablity is expected (come to my house - 17 yr old boy and 15 yr old girl - if you want proof. 1b) Who knows what they did between games? When my sons' club teams travels, they are prohibited from going in the pool since a many moons ago team (this is an established program) left all their energy there and got wiped out. 2) Pitcher performance. Softball/Baseball is so dependent on the pitcher. She may have pitched the game of her life the first night or had the worst night of her life the second. And/or, she got the equivalent of flipping heads fifty times in a row the first night (i.e. defense made plays, was 1/4 of an inch closer to the strike zone because of the wind or her catchers framing, etc.) 2) Catcher. We know how important F2 is - see above, U3K, passed balls, etc. 3) The bats. We've all seen a teams bats collectively fall silent. They may have incorrectly thought they had the umps zone figured out from the night before and were working walks (if same PU) or couldn't figured the new PU - NOT saying the PU was deficient in either case but a new PU is a new zone. 4) Humans were involved 5) Sh*t happens

  3. Heck no! I’d want the body cam recording from the plate meeting itself! Not only would we get enough footage of silly ground rules, and stupid questions from coaches, but we could finally identify those jacka$$ colleagues who wheeze on with these long-winded explanations of “their zone”, and “how to approach an umpire”, and “sportsmanship”. @Kevin_K, @Richvee, @conbo61 and the rest of the Jersey Blues are excused, because your state forces you to recite that crap. 🤮 Can’t be. His entire post reeks of teenaged, entitled bawling. 😩 Methinks he-thinks the particular umpire he had for his game had something against him, and when he “questioned” said umpire, he got dumped. Second-most likely scenario is same situation, except our main character is an Adult Rec player.

  4. Max, agree on all good points. Maybe I missed something in his OP - was he referring to a recent MLB game? But my mind went directly to my own little world of summer daddy ball. I wonder if I was wearing said police-type body cam, would super dad have screeched “you f****** piece of s***” from the stands thrice as he was being EJ for keeping his little darling in the box on a nullified HBP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I would love to see some reactions when closing the pregame mtg - “ok guys, good luck, I’m hitting the body cam record button now.” [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Min 6' height, max 12'. Necessary speed range could probably be calculated. Nope. SAT and ACT scores are not required this year.

  6. Well, Mr. johnnyg08, I also have the 2021 Minor League Baseball Umpire Manual and I am looking at the exact page I cited. The citation I gave is absolutely correct--I don't know why there would be any discrepancy between my copy and yours. Section 5.12 talks about OBR rule 5.06(a)(1) if that helps at all. My copy has 183 pages counting blank end pages and it shows a copyright date of 2021.

  7. 2019 MiLB Manual: No signal, page 46 2019 MLBUM Manual: No signal 2018 MLBUM: Same as 2019 2017 MLBUM: Same as 2018, 2019 2016 MLBUM: Play: Batter-Runner hits a ground ball and beats the play at first base but misses the base. Ruling: The proper mechanic is for the umpire to call the runner safe, indicating he beat the play. If the defense appeals by tagging the runner (or base) and appealing that the runner missed first base before the runner returns to first base, the batter-runner would be declared out. Old Mechanic: MLBUM: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 Related Play:

  8. F3 never tagged 1B on the initial throw. Once the BR completely passes 1B the out has to be an obvious appeal, tag of either base or runner, that the BR missed 1B. That touch was not an appeal. The need for an appeal did not change in the MLBUM's various interps. Only the signal was changed if anyone ascribed to that change, which is up for debate .

  9. From the 2021 Minor League Baseball Umpire Manual (section 5.12, p. 55): A runner does not acquire the right to an unoccupied base on an attempt to retire the runner until he touches it before he is put out. This is true regardless of whether the umpire’s act of not making a call signifies to the defensive team that the runner failed to touch the base for purposes of an appeal play. Play 1: Batter-runner hits a ground ball and beats the play at first base but misses the bag as he passes it with both feet. Ruling 1: The proper mechanic is for the umpire to make no call on the play because the batter-runner has not yet touched first base. If the defense appeals by tagging the runner (or base) and appealing that the runner missed first base before the runner returns to first base, the batter-runner would be declared out… This text was new in the book for the 2018 season in Minor League Baseball. It further explained that the interpretation was added to clarify that on plays where the batter-runner overruns and misses first base and has both feet beyond the base before a play is made there, the umpire should make no “Safe” call (i.e., make no call on the play).

  11. (Said in my best Frau Blucher impression) oohhh... date. My last game for this year was 4th of July. As for next season... we shall see. I dont want to hijack this. So I won't get into it more. I'll probably do my own post on it some time down the road.

  12. No, but when a batter complained that I called a strike on a pitch that almost hit him in the dick, I informed him that, no, it didn't, because he was six inches away from the plate.

  14. I tried to stop the old school cross body point for lefties once and was just lost behind this big 6’ 4” 270 lb. hitter. I just went back to the cross body. I never knew why I (with no one on) look at my finger either but never been dinged for it nor missed any action on the field so I left well enough alone. At this point (no pun) in my career both hs and college, I am just gonna keep doing what I do including an occasional hammer for the swinging caught strike 3-3rd out. If the point works for cool kids like Mad Max then why not for old dogs like Mr Ump. Photo Credit - Referee Magazine, March ‘21
