  1. The plate coat in my profile pic -- shown here larger so you can see just how sexy I am -- is the highly esteemed Fechheimer. The best part is that it was just GIVEN to me by a retiring umpire, and fits like it was tailored to my exact dimensions. I never win anything, but I'm calling this a huge win!

  3. What's up with all the recent locked threads? @The Man in Blue and others (caveat: this is NOT directed at someone specific, and is not personal). Before I start, no, ...no one is doing anything 'wrong'. First: Please remember that just because I lock the "sold" items on the 'Buy/Sell/Trade' forum does not mean I lock threads on all forums. There are other Mods besides me, plus Warren Second: That being said, ...this week I've locked 2 threads that I can recall. Both of them were on the 'Ask the umpire' forum, and both of them also had had the question answered more than one time (correctly), and ... things started getting funny, (yes, no harm done) but ... it's the 'Ask the umpire' forum and Warren and the moderator crew believe this forum should be just that ... ASK / ANSWER, and keep it clean (tidy). It's one of our "information source" forums. I also recall moving a thread @SeeingEyeDog into another forum because it was already being discussed. I locked it, then moved the information. @JonnyCat .... yes, it's a discussion forum and that's what we're supposed to do, I agree, but hopefully my description helped. If you've seen other threads that you don't think should have been locked, please bring them to my attention. Now, for clarification - no one loves a good joke, pun, GIF, whatever where appropriate, and we do plenty of that on this site and NO, I am not opposed to it, nor is the rest of the moderating team. But again, Ask the Umpire is an info forum that we want to keep clean and tidy. @Umpire in Chief ... Warren, please chime in if I missed anything here. Also, other mods please jump in too

  5. FWIW, and without any specific examples or references, I think more threads should be locked earlier.

  6. I agree, especially the ones that have my comments in them! @Thunderheads Thanks for the clarification!

  8. I have to agree with @dumbdumb. Probably a no step. I didn't see any chance of a knee pop and there was a proper jab step to 3B. I'm guessing the manager's "what he do" was responded to by a leg slap from one of the umps which then let him know he couldn't come out for an explanation.

  9. For the most part, we all treat each other with respect, despite sometimes ardent disagreement.

  10. Thank you @Thunderheads! I just hadn't noticed it before so it caught my eye. I wondered if it was like those "behind the fence" conversations ... I know they go on all the time without me ever noticing, but the right words (or the wrong ones) at the right time (or the wrong one!) catch my ear. I knew about the sold items; I was talking about the recent ones in the Ask the Umpire section. There were a couple of comments right before the lock that made me wonder. Asked and answered! Thank you! (Like I said, just wanted to make sure we weren't causing any problems.)

  12. Because a split second before the torque wrench was applied to the faucet handle, it had been calibrated by top members of the state and federal department of weights and measures to be dead-on balls accurate. Props to any umpire who tells a coach "the call is certified dead-on balls accurate".

  13. Only 10? If a player got completely knocked down, it's quite likely they would have run 10 feet in the time it takes them to get back up and get back to speed. Now if it was 30 feet, that's a horse of a different color. Your judgment, obviously, but if a player gets completely knocked down (as opposed to a stumble), I'm giving him quite a lot

  14. The runner is out. Being injured (even if the injury was caused by the legal play of the defense) does not entitle the runner to a free pass to a base. Note that if the ball became dead before the runner was out (ball thrown out of play, home run, etc.) then the runner would be entitled to any awarded bases *and* that a substitute could take the injured runner's place to complete the award.

  15. well, that's very profound Rich but ... that's really not the OP's gist. It's what, and how it's being done. But, I'm sure you're aware, and you're probably someone who'd ask that question. But, I digress ....

  16. It’s more “frequency & familiarity” for me, @KenBAZ and the rest of us in Phoenix. We see these coaches (and players, too) so often, on so many games, on so many plays, these guys know what Outs look like, and what our (umpire) “calling cards” are. Most umpires – Ken and I included – won’t be affected or swayed by a BC’s pleadings, so what’s the point? Conversely, there are the occasional umpires who get waaaay bent out of shape over a BC’s theatrics, and go right to emphatically cautioning, formally warning, or generally escalating strife to the point of ejecting. … all over a hopeful safe mechanic? 🤨 Really?? There are far taller hills to die on, guys.

  17. There is only one standard. That is there is no 'wipe off".

  18. Think of it this way: ejection is a resort—who doesn't enjoy a resort? Sure, it's a last resort, but still a resort.

  19. My last triple crown game ever, in Longmont many moons ago, went like this: ball down the line, I point fair, catcher turns, points at me, yells, "that's bullSH*# blue." I jack him, coach comes out respectfully. Goes back without a peep. I think, "hey, that was smooth, life goes on, next brother doesn't have to deal with this turd." Triple crown used the fed 1 game suspension rule at the time. At least the tournaments we did. What happened after is burned in my mind forever. We walk off, I tell the tournament director (snake), who watched it all. He replies, "the kid said he was sorry, we're gonna let him keep playing the next game." Slapped my unfinished card on the table, eat and never looked back. No more Steamboat, no Park City, nothing. Mavens right here. Its all about the money. Your just an expendable warm body that gives a little street cred to their operation.
