  1. If the runner was advancing or gave the impression of advancing that is a legal move. If that league allowed protests it would have been upheld if the protest comittee was more knowledgeable than the guys wearing umpire shirts at that game and the reason for the balk was as is described.

  2. This is the highest level of interest for you? Or, did you mean piqued? I'm waiting with baited [sic] breath for the answer. (I will add that I agree with the previous answers that the first depends on the code and the second is legal as described. As a practical matter, though, it's very difficult to have F1 execute this "option." Either he commits to the pitch, and then tries to adjust and does something that creates a balk, or he's looking for the option and then can't make an accurate pith or an accurate throw to second.)

  4. Doesn't matter. It's interference. You may think it's unfair, but it's even more unfair to teach them something that isn't the rule.

  5. One of our Phoenix colleagues is rather well known for having to cover just about all his exposed skin. Long sleeve umpire shirts are just too hot and cost prohibitive for him, so he's allowed and encouraged to wear same-color / accent-color sleeves and balaclavas. He even has a black wide-brimmed bush / safari / jungle hat that he wears on the bases. Assigners and colleagues here all understand. You know what looks passable? The 2016 MLB Panel -style shirt, with black or grey under-sleeves (black for black, sky blue, grey, or pink shirts; grey for grey or black shirts). Doesn't look that out of place. Even the 2010 Vertical stripe -style shirt doesn't look too bad. Know what looks stupid as h3ll with under-sleeves? Even if you get navy, or red, those red & white trim stripes just break up the arm. Then, most guys don't use navy under-sleeves, instead going for the cheaper, more available black... So Association Guys & Assigners!... how do you fix this? Modernize your shirts! Hey, check it out... someone's actually making a 2016 Panel -style in Navy: Would I wear that back in Wisconsin, or in any of the other navy-holdout states? Sure would... because while I wouldn't be thrilled to wear it, I'd at least delight in the knowledge that the clowns out there would have to buy at least one new shirt, too. Which means, that while appreciated for supplying it to Ump-Attire for resale to us, the shirt, like sooooo many other things, isn't. made. for. us. yet.

  6. As mentioned,, depends on the rules set for the first question. For the second, if you meant he stepped behind rubber toward 2nd it is legal to throw/feint to an unoccupied base provided he is attempting to retire/drive back a runner. Any rules set

  7. How about a long sleeve Uv protective sleeve (only sleeve rest of shirt to assignors requirement) color that conforms to the various assignor demands? Skin color, side panel color, any other assignor fashion statement. Long sleeves under short sleeves is a fashion nogo which I agree with in cold weather. In hot weather long wicking sun protective sleeves are necessary for some umps that even slathering sun screen will not keep their derm happy. BTW most of you will become that ump if you do it long enough without protection.

  8. I know it's been requested by some, so maybe they're thinking about doing it. I know what you mean about memory though, it seems like I've heard something about memory and age or something like that somewhere, sometime.

  10. I think in the future maybe say... "I've never had that happen before and I am going to go and get into the rule book, I want to get it right."

  11. That was how I started. I dont even remember working the bases for the first year or 3! I was on the plate every game I worked. It just was what it was! It helped I was a catcher. So strapping it on didnt bug me much. Now, any time I work a youth game with a junior umpire, I am on the bases. I want to make sure they get proficient where our bread is buttered.
