The penalty for chickensh!t plays like this (in any sport - baseball, football, hockey, etc.) should be a suspension greater than the amount of time the injured player misses. I know that will never happen though.4 points

Thank you! It’s definitely a lot tougher making judgement calls within a split second. When you go to review, our hearts are thumping with nerves because we WANT to get ALL of them right. Thanks again! SK3 points

True story from this game: we entered the top of the 7th inning at 1:15. The visitors were winning 4-0. The PA announcer then starts cracking jokes about us being "on a record pace" and "this may be the fastest game in stadium history". I knew exactly what was going to happen next. The top of the seventh took two minutes (five pitch inning). But then the home team scored 4 (not one, two, three or five...but four) runs in the bottom of the seventh. We ended up playing 12 full innings in 2:59. Some guys just deserve to be shot.3 points

Thanks! Again, sorry for the delayed reply. Media is part of it, but so is the human element. I actually go back and watch my games again bc I’m my toughest critic. A lot of times, if media thinks I’ve missed a pitch in the little square, I may have thought it was a good pitch until the “presentation” is animated to show me he’s trying to fool me because he thought it was not a strike. His job is to make it look good; most do a great job at catching “strikes” and throwing back the “balls.” I don’t want to be a play by play guy and no medi person wants to umpire for 3.5 hrs in front of 10k-15k each weekend like the SEC. It’s not easy. SK2 points

Just considering how expensive some bats can be, I would, as a parent who purchased said bats, not be thrilled to have my kids coach allow the other team to use my son's bat. If only LL baseball would distribute to all of the managers, coaches and umpires some form of document which would codify their rules in one easy to access resource. They could bound such book in an easy to see color scheme, like Green, and hand it out to leagues and other participants so that we can all know the rules and be on the same page. Oh, wait... Too bad for the other coach who allowed his players to use illegal bats all season. Sorry they only will be swinging bats they are not use to... However, keep in mind the old adage "if you're not cheating, you're not trying', so maybe this was the other coach just doing his normal thing and trying to get advantages he was not entitled to. Too bad the illegal bats were discovered prior to the game. as the penalty in Allstars is quite severe for use of illegal bats. Sounds like it would have been fun for this coach to get caught using these not eligible bats.2 points

I ran into this a lot when I was starting. You will run into good partners sooner or later. When you do, pick their brains. Seek out good clinics, and you have already found this place, which has a wealth of info.2 points

It all comes out at once. If you’re picked to work the CWS, you’ll only work the regional...not the supers. They give you the break that weekend. SK1 point

USA bats have no drop limitation and are approved for Minors thru Intermediate. LL also allows BBCOR for Intermediate and Junior and requires BBCOR for Seniors.1 point

Since R1 was forced at the time of his miss, then the appeal is a force out as well. No runs score in either scenario.1 point

If the team is just cheering for their players and nothing is changing during the whole time the pitcher is delivering, then other than some unsportsmanlike issue, I'm ignoring. Now if they crescendo when the F1 is delivering, or they are dead quiet until that point and then suddenly loud, that I am addressing.1 point

I'm late to the party, but last fall I started wearing my Samsung Smart Watch versus carrying a small watch in my ball bag, The Samsung looks like a normal digital watch, except it stays dark unless i prompt it, or when the alarm goes off: 1) By the rules, Umpires are REQUIRED at the tourney facility here and in most travel leagues here to keep the time 2) The countdown timer on it has basically eliminated any arguing that there was still a minute left or whatnot: if the alarm goes off before the inning is over, that is the last inning, no arguments. If it goes off seconds after the third out is made and sides are being switched for the start of the top, we are playing the inning. 3) it tracks my steps, my miles, and my heart rate during the game(s) = very cool 4) phones do look shady to me.. Its asking for trouble, i think.. are you looking at how much time is left or are you checking messages/social media? If I look like an inexperienced newbie, so be it. Hopefully I convert most newbie haters by the end of most games...1 point

That's not what the rule requires--only an unmistakable act. The coach yelling + the player obeying and acting = an appeal. Nor, in the circumstances, was the act inadvertent. And it's not a matter of judgment. It is about not adding additional requirements to the rule.1 point
-
Yes, it's a judgment thing--was it an unmistakable act? And, as described, I would have it as an appeal (and an out) in the OP, as I see the play in my mind's eye. If the play is changed so the ball is caught a little sooner, and R32 is tagged just after sliding into third, then you might judge the tag to be an attempt to retire an advancing runner, and not an appeal. Or, if the play is changed so F5 "playfully" tags R2 before quickly returning the ball to the pitcher -- you might not have an appeal. Bur, with the coaches yelling and F5 deliberately tagging the runner clearly standing on the base -- this is an appeal.1 point

From the 2019 Little League Rules Instruction Manual: 4.06 - No manager, coach or player, shall at any time, whether from the bench or the playing field or elsewhere – (b) use language which will in any manner refer to or reflect upon opposing players, manager, coach, an umpire or spectators; INSTRUCTOR'S COMMENTS: This includes firing up the crowd against the umpires or opposing team. The penalty is ejection from the game. Language from anyone that reflects badly upon opposing players, manager, coach, an umpire or spectators. Penalty is ejection. Most teams, particularly infielders, chatter (“Hey, batter, batter”) when the ball is being delivered. This is usually acceptable, and has not caused any problems in local leagues. Do not, however, allow any player, especially the catcher, to yell “Swing” at the batter when the ball is being delivered. (c) make any move calculated to cause the pitcher to commit an illegal pitch [a balk in BASEBALL: Intermediate (50-70) Division/Junior/Senior League]; INSTRUCTOR'S COMMENTS: Stop this maneuver immediately. This could involve many acts, such as the batter stepping out of box or raising his/her hand toward the pitcher, the base coach yelling “Go” or “Balk”, the base runner yelling, or the manager yelling “Time” from the dugout. The base runner clapping his/her hands or kicking the dirt is normally not a problem and should be ignored. Even though the following case play is for high school I think it goes quite well with the previous Little League rules. And I also think it just might be the IIRC Mr. Richvee mentioned. 2014 NFHS Baseball Rules Interpretations SITUATION 12: The visiting team has developed an orchestrated team action to cheer on a teammate to get a rally going. The action consists of a rhythmic series of hand claps and foot stomps. RULING: As long as the action is within the spirit of fair play, and not intended to induce a balk, create a distraction for the opposing team or intimidate/demean them, this action is acceptable. There have been some instances where a team, for example, begins to pound bats in the dugout only when the opposing pitcher begins to deliver a pitch. That action is clearly intended to gain an advantage and is not to be allowed. (3-3-1)1 point

@spark2212 "And there’s nothing any opposing manager can do? " Usually a player has a tendency to flirt with the line on this one on a regular basis vs. it being some one time thing (ie they take huge steps, tend to drag bunt/slap hit, or they stand on the very edge of the box). Only thing I've seen is managers asking the umpire to look for it (on a specific player even), and then that umpire making a call the next at bat when it does happen. As far as it being reviewable in the MLB, sure I guess, but how often does this actually happen at MLB level? I would guess close to never.1 point

I'll just say this...more bad decisions have been made by umpires and league officials "in the name of safety". I''m afraid this was one of them.1 point

Believe you are correct as far as the CWS guys go. They cannot work back to back i.e. Super and then CWS. They work a Regional first, rest for the SR and then work CWS, just like MLBU works a Divisional first, rest for the League Championships and then work WS. However, you can work a Regional and Super Regional back to back, but that means no CWS. They have taken away the previous suggestion that NCAA guys only work a CWS once every three years. You can now work back to back CWS, and maybe even every year. 5 guys worked the CWS in 2018. Costello, Haze (alternate), Henrichs, Savage (Alternate), Coskey (alternate this year). On another note as I mentioned last year. Only 3 (it looks like Grady Smith (taking Chambers place from last year so to speak) Coskey and Savage again, (who only started umpiring for one reason from an article, not from love of umpiring, "he decided to give officiating a shot, for one simple reason -- financial gain", although if you can umpire, the reason to umpire doesn't matter one iota) have never worked pro ball. I would have expected at least a 5/6 split or a 6/5 split. It just cannot be that Chambers, Coskey, and Savage and now Smith are the only non MiLB and maybe even no umpire school, that can work the CWS. There are people and supervisors out scouting and mentoring. There should be more non pro ball guys that are qualified or they are not being mentored and instructed properly. They have been going to the Mid-American umpire camps that are mentioned on this site and others, along with toiling away for 10-15 years with NCAA D1 Conference games and the Tournament at the end. They should be just as qualified after years of camps, clinics and seasons of games (has to be at least be 35 if I remember right to be eligible for post season to begin with) for Regionals, SR, and CWS. If not, once again, the mentors are not taking care of business on their end.1 point

I think the NCAA may be similar to MLB in that an umpire does not work two consecutive rounds. If that is the case, he certainly demonstrated that he is more than capable, and richly deserving of, the big stage. KENNEDY - OMAHA 2020!!!!1 point

Late in the game there was a 2 strike pitch just off the outside edge. The announcer comes out with a "where was that?" line we've all heard too often...They play a replay and the guy sheepishly says something like , "Nevermind, that's outside. Scott's having a great night behind the pate."1 point
