There's no Ask the Scorekeeper website. Since the score keeping rules are in the general rule book, this is as good a place as any. I find that understanding how the game is scored actually helps make some of the rules make sense, and easier to understand/remember. Umpires, coaches, players and score keepers alike would benefit from the entire rule book.

The rules provide no explicit penalty for INT by a coach who is pitching. I recommend suspending the game, taking the video to the league, and letting them handle the fines, suspensions, whippings, drawing/quartering, burning at the stake, beheading, and firing squad that are the usual consequences for this kind of infraction. Please don't allow this travesty of the game to go unaddressed: these kids will not learn anything with role models like that. @Senor Azul, what does the BRD have on this?

If you don’t have to have the check. Look at amazon and the Rawlings black mask pads. They are almost the same. Just cut off Rawlings patch.

Check out diamonddugout.com, they have some masks on closeout for $30.00. They are super light...about 20 ounces. They only have certain colors left, but they will do the job and save you some money.

I use a Diamond iX3 with the team wendy pads. Pads were replaced after 3 games as they ripped apart. Great CS by Ump Attire. I took a shot off a foul ball that sent my mask flying. Did I feel the hit? Yes. Was it painful? No. However, the mask did its job and no broken bones, swollen cheek, etc. Also, the mask had no visibile structural integrity issues. https://www.ump-attire.com/Baseball-Umpire-Equipment/Gear-Footwear/Masks/DFM-UMP_Diamond-iX3-Aluminum-Umpire-Mask-with-Quik-Dry?id=155

I can't recall if they were sold or not. But I know @jwclubbie had a set of pads and a Nike harness for $160.

Thank you, Gary Moskalyk, for asking this question--I learned something about scorekeeping. In the past, I have always noted this kind of play as a caught stealing and as it turns out, it is not (by rule 9.07h). And something else it is not—it is not a wild pitch by rule (9.13 Comment). 2018 OBR Rule 9.13 Comment: The official scorer shall not charge a wild pitch or passed ball if the defensive team makes an out before any runners advance. For example, if a pitch touches the ground and eludes the catcher with a runner on first base, but the catcher recovers the ball and throws to second base in time to retire the runner, the official scorer shall not charge the pitcher with a wild pitch. The official scorer shall credit the advancement of any other runner on the play as a fielder’s choice. If a catcher drops a pitch, for example, with a runner on first base, but the catcher recovers the ball and throws to second base in time to retire the runner, the official scorer shall not charge the catcher with a passed ball. The official scorer shall credit the advancement of any other runner on the play as a fielder’s choice… So, you have the putout at the plate (2-1) and you account for the advancement of R1 to second base as a fielder’s choice on the putout.

If the price difference is an issue I'd get the Aluminum Wilson with the black pads for $109. You can always change the pads later. I tried to wear the Wilson steel and it is just too heavy for me and I wound't consider buying one to save money for pads when the black memory foams are great. If you really want the grey pads another option is to get a +POS zero-g steel mask for $50 and order the Wilson pads you want. I love my POS steel masks and wear them more than anything else I have.

Spend the money on the better equipment. You'll be thankful every time you work a plate game. The price difference is less than a game fee.

Of course it's a foul ball. Became dead in the box.

According to the wonderful world of baseball in New Jersey, umpires are not allowed to talk about post season assignments. From the assigners of post season baseball in NJ: "If we find out that you shared this info with anyone but your crew, you will be disqualified from working."

Should've spent some of that road time teaching base runners not to be idiots/a-holes.

I agree with the 3.3.1b carelessly throw bat & 3.3.1f unsportsmanlike conduct. Team warning and move on. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
