  1. Past hour
  2. Maybe you can include 5 things you think I am doing right, and 5 things I can improve on, so I can get some criticism but also know the areas I’m strong in.
  3. Can a pitcher switch from an overhead windup to a 3/4 windup to a sidearm windup during a game? Is that an "alteration"?Can a pitcher lift his pivot foot from the rubber to turn it sideways to deliver? OBR addressed the double free foot step a while ago and sent that pitcher back to the minors to correct it. They have not sent Cortez back to the minors. @Richvee while quoting the "hesitation" part of the OBR and NCAA rule are you going to dispute NCAA then allowing a "Note 2: A pitcher may pause during the delivery from the windup position without penalty." to accommodate the "Japanese delivery." Are coaches upset by this delivery? Are batters upset by this delivery? Batters are upset by some MLB pitcher's delivery such as the guys who don't windup from a windup and then do wind up from a wind up but I don't see batters upset by Cortez. Follow your code. FED very strict and no Japanese windup for the cohort of some of the simpleton umpires in their cohort. NCAA changing and allowing a pause in the windup due to OBR allowing it but not allowing shenanigans such as double leg kicks in the windup and I suspect Nestor's shenanigans.
  4. It’s not that I don’t mind advice, it’s just hard sometimes to follow. I’m sorry if I am not coming off as not wanting to expect advice, I do want advice. I’m sorry if I have come off as annoyed when I get advice, I can get overwhelmed really easily when there are a bunch of posts with advice, and I can come off as annoyed. I’m sorry if people on the site have felt that I don’t want their feedback. It’s just hard when everyone is throwing it all at once. If you have some advice for me, would you be willing to message it to me privately so I can break it down and process it.
  5. Local leagues, low level tournaments, I'd say probably ok for short visit that doesn't slow the game down. High School and up, best to not have visitors during game. True story - I'm on plate of a 12U local league game. Between half innings I'm up toward team coming to bat side, I hear a voice from beyond the fence - "Blue". I ignore. Again, "blue", I ignore. Third time, same scenario. Then... KAISER! Yep, it's my wife! She had stopped by the park to ask me about something she had to go do. I wasn't expecting her. The folks in the bleachers got a pretty good laugh on that one.
  6. Today
  7. “Without hesitation or alteration.” it’s in all three codes. If kicking you free leg up, then back down, then wrapping your free leg around your pivot leg, faking a motion to pitch, kicking you leg back up, and then delivering a pitch isn’t both hesitation and/or alteration, I don’t know what is. I’m calling this an illegal pitch in every single level I umpire…. From low teen travel stuff through college.
  8. What are two things that aren't in my kitchen?
  9. To quote a coach friend when I asked his thoughts (seeing aside any rulebook assessment): "Yes, should be illegal to do what Nestor did. Clown show. "
  10. I didn't say that! Hotty Toddy!
  11. I was referring to the way you responded to advice from people trying to help you out. As a teacher, I have learned to step back and let people learn on their own. As for Libka, it was just a joke since he had an ejection on the night I believe you said he was debuting the retrofit.
  12. 5.07(1) 5.07(2) I would say the feint in the middle was a definite violation of "any natural motion associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without alteration or interruption." I'll also take a flyer on the "shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in the actual delivery of the ball." ... and then I'll break out a soap box I haven't gotten on in a while: STOP LOOKING FOR REASONS TO ALLOW THIS CRAP. It is a violation of the spirit of the game.
  13. I appreciate all of the feedback, thank you everyone. I figure we might as well design one shirt in public. The team is working on a few things and I'll just throw a couple in here to get some votes and direction and see what everyone thinks. Much easier to judge a rendering then a palette.
  14. While I will agree there are potentially some problem areas on the infield, I would contend that 99% of the time multiple infielders on a dead sprint are indicative of the one guy who could make the routine play not making his play.
  15. Can you please explain to me how those are NOT unsportsmanlike behavior?
  16. Depends, which side of the street is the winery on?
  17. Their conclusion is "don't do that". Personally I don't find that compelling and believe it ignores the Umpire Manual (at least the MiLB version I have since the MLB manual is not publicly available). If I see it (and I'd rather I not) I'm calling it an illegal pitch in the LL (14U and below) games I do.
  18. It’s been repeated a couple time that the fair/foul and catch/no catch are the top priorities so you want the best position for those calls but no one has addressed why this is priority. For one, if the ball falls untouched in fair territory there is no need for R3 to tag up. If the ball is touched fair and dropped then there is also no need to tag up. If the ball is touched foul and dropped then there will be no further action. The only other option is the ball is caught, whether fair or foul and only then will there be a need to rule on the tag at 3rd. 75% of the possible outcomes on that ball will result in the tag-up at 3rd being entirely inconsequential; so to me it’s better to get up the line and make a ruling on the priorities. This is a pitfall of 2-umpire mechanics. You won’t see everything with only two guys so get the most important stuff first.
  19. I think back in the day OBR also had some reference to "pumps or rotations" and that might qualify. But just go here; Close Call Sports & Umpire Ejection Fantasy League
  20. That is the motion I am keying in on. Will have to pull up the OBR book when I get home. IMO, it sure looked like a motion to pitch without delivering the ball.

  22. I think runners on base would not need a balk call to advance as they probably will have advanced during his dance if he was foolish enough to windup like that with runners on. Which I don’t think Cortez would be.
  23. LOL - I must have added my edit the same time you posted. I have the same question. I genuinely don't know the answer. I suspect it's TOI and the first run counts, but won't be surprised if neither run counts.
  24. I follow you @beerguy55. I'd argue TOI. Exercise to explore this: Baseline: 2 outs, R3, batter interferes with Fielder --> Batter is ruled as the third out, no runs scores. Scenario: 2 outs, R3, R2, wild pitch, R3 advances home cleanly with no batter INT. Then R2 advances for home and Batter interferes. (Plausible example: wild pitch that goes up 3B line, batter loitering around home plate, R3 scores standing up (no play - no INT). Then R2 goes for home too while batter is still loitering and batter interferes with throw from F2 to F1. Batter is ruled out for INT. One run or no runs score?
  25. The issue I'm raising is if the batter is the one called out for INT. If batter is called out, he's the third out...and he never reached first base (he never even became a runner)...by strict interpretation of the rule R3's run doesn't count. It's all one continuous playing action from the pitch to the throw to F3 to the throw to F4/6. Is it TOI or TOP? Does it matter? Not to mention, are we really ruling the batter did NOT interfere when he ran to first, but did once he headed to second? If R2 is called out for batter's action, as the closest runner to home, then there's no issue...it's a time play. R3's run scores...however, batter bats the next inning because he wasn't called out, and he never became a runner in the scenario. Edit: let's play it out a different way. Passed ball, and batter gets out of the way...throw from F2 goes past F1; R3 scores and now R2 tries to advance...as F6 throws home the batter now gets in F2's way to make the play, and the ump rules INT. Is the batter called out or is the runner called out? Pretty sure with two out it's the batter. If the batter, does him being the third out negate the first run that scored on the play?
  26. IMHO which doesn't mean squat, think the last 2 we have seen were balks with runners on and illegal pitches if no one is on. the step off step back on and this double pitch if you ask me. his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch (not pitches, a fake/feint pitch and a real pitch) without interruption or alteration (of one pitch, not 2). let's hope this is like Joe West putting baseball in the jackpot, by saying the pitcher could not use a card, either by interpreting the rule that was as written that way or invoking 9.01c oops i thing it is 8.01c now. and guess what. they did make an immediate ruling/clarification that said he could use the card. they did not wait till the end of the year or the next year. so, if we have not heard, yet, any memo's being sent out on these last 2, they are saying the no calls of an illegal pitch means they were legal. and let's see what happens if runners are on base and they do this. will it be a balk for both or let it go.
  27. "Republicans buy sneakers too" ?
  28. @Daniel1961 what level of play was this?
