Infield Fly or no

Question

Little League Minors

Bases loaded no outs

Flare of a fly ball approx 12 to 15 feet high has decent enough arc. its down the 3rd base line midway between the plate and 3rd base.

I was PU

I looked at it nearly said something however No one broke to catch it until it was too late. 3rd baseman was day dreaming  pitcher got a very late break on it and came at it diving at it.

I held my call as that was not a routine play.

Every base runner moved up one as the ball dropped fair and the pitcher on his dive knocked it 10 or so feet from him into foul territory.

defensive team AC asks why was that not a IFF.  I looked at him and asked him if he thought the pitcher diving at the ball was a routine play.  He shrugged it off and said OK. Grandpa in the stands had other thoughts and let me know later that night in the parking lot.

I can defend it either way.

The standard is "can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort".

And that is adjusted to the skill/age you're umping.

F5 didn't make the play because he was daydreaming...if he had been alert, like most(?) players at that level, could he have made the catch with ordinary effort?

I would have no problem with an IFF here (as your first instinct appeared to be)...and I have no problem with your slight delay to assess that F5 was no longer in the picture and not call it.

In the end, the rule is meant to protect the offense, not the defense.

If this ended up with F1 scooping the ball and stepping on third and throwing to second for a DP you'd have an ugly can of worms on your hand.

Ugly, but easily fixable.

THIS ^^^^^^ with the caveat that I'll buy it not being an IFF in minors.  After that it certainly was one.

I’m with everybody else ... could go either way and your call was fine.

IFF is tricky when you start adjusting for age/talent level and even the wind.

And what is it with grand-pas in the parking lot lately?  Bunch of dirty old pervs just hanging out there?  :P

A tangential question: LL Minors = what age?

Typically 10u.  Could be some 11s, if inexperienced.

It's skill based.   7-11.  Most 11's and some 10's will be in majors
