Call strike up or down?

Question

Guest R. Duke

Was watching MLB tonight, on a called strike HPU called strike while down then rose up to signal strike.

I was always taught to call and signal in the up position.  Which method is preferred or is this a non-issue?

Thanks.

The voice down and then giving the mechanic was/is the old way of doing it. It was how I was taught in the late 90s when I started. Now, it is voice and mechanic in unison.

I call strike while down and rise up for the mechanic. Worked with umps that do both while down and umps that do both up. Baseball sometimes gets too picky on stupid things that don’t really matter. Either way it’s a strike
