Question

Due up for the opposing team is B5, B6, and B7.

First batter comes to the plate is B6, pitch to him and grounds out.  Next batter comes to the plate is B5, he is hit by the first pitch.

How many outs are there? Who comes to the plate next? Who are the runners on the base, if any?

The pitch to B5 "legitimized" B6's at-bat.  B7 *should have been* the next batter, but that's only going to matter if the defense appeals.

So far, the defense hasn't appeals, so only B6 is out.  B5 is at first, and B6 is the next batter (the batter after B5).

But, if the defense now appeals, B7 is out (for failing to bat after B6), and B8 is the next batter.  B5 is removed from the bast, and two are out.

Technically, B6 should be coming up again...but, that order would only be legitimized by B6 getting a pitch.   Practically, it would likely raise red flags if B6 batted again, so, put B7 in and hope nobody notices the snafu for a few more minutes.  The only problem is, if you do that, though you may have a lesser chance of getting caught, now the batting order isn't corrected until B8 gets a pitch.

If B7 does come to the plate  and gets a pitch (namely because he always knew he was third up that inning), that would legitimize B5's at bat, meaning B6 should be batting...if defense appeals at that point (assuming B7 is still at plate), B6 and B7 simply switch.

If B7 completes his at bat, and defense appeals, then B6 is out (again) for failing to bat after B5, and B7 would bat again.  If the lineup gets to B8 without defense appealing, and he gets a pitch, all will be back to "normal"
