The second in my stumped NFHS Test Question series:

With a runner advancing to third base, the second out is recorded at first base. The first baseman, wrongly thinking the play was the third out, tosses the ball to the base umpire who catches the ball and holds it.

A. With the runner advancing, the ball stays live and in play.

B. The ball is immediately dead.

C. The runner is awarded third base.

D. B and C.

My initial thought was (D), as I'm awarding bases to nullify the umpire error. With a runner advancing to third (and, taking the question literally, hadn't touched third) and a toss to the umpire that should have just started rolling around the infield, R2's getting 3B without a problem.

However, the Dead Ball Table says it's an immediate dead ball and "runners return to bases they had reached or passed when ball became dead". So, now my answer is (B), but I can't find anything else to support or reject this.

Any help on finding support for either (B) or (D)?
