MLB Umpiring Life

Question

Guest Hawkeye

Couldn't answer this for my wife. What's a MLB umpire's week like during the season? How do they travel-with team planes or on separate commercial flights? Does a crew stay together with the same members throughout a season (excepting for injuries, etc) or do they rotate regularly? Players are home for half a season so they can spend some time (small as it may be) with spouse, kids etc. What about umps--they don't really get to do "home" games. How many days and when do they get them off? Are any arranged so they can be near their residence during the off day or do they just fall wherever?  Do they live the entire season in hotels? They don't take batting or fielding practice every day, so what do they do between games-read books, watch TV, play chess (I'm guessing they spend some time going over the previous day's performance-sharing tips, critiques, etc, but that can't take up the whole day)? Are they allowed to bring a spouse along to a game? If so, how does that work-- do they have to pay the travel, seat ticket, and hotel or does some of it get comped by the teams? Where do they eat and who pays?  How does their laundry get done (both uniform and personal attire)?

She was just wondering about the small details of these guys' lives. They are mostly invisible and anonymous, but obviously have the same human concerns as anyone else. But few of us fans know much about them.

Also... the UFEL has former MLB umpire Bob Davidson regularly contributing to the site now... maybe log in there and ask Bob directly.
