(New Ump Here) Fake Pick Off

Question

Guest ChiTownUmp

Pitcher comes set and then goes to pick off move to any base. Does the pitcher have to commit and throw the ball. ANd if there is one what is the penalty.

Depends on what rule set you're using.

 

Fake to 1st - Illegal in all codes

Fake to 2nd - Legal if done properly in all codes

Fake to 3rd - Legal if done properly in FED (high school), LL, most misc. rule sets... Illegal in OBR.

 

It's a balk when illegal.

Way too broad of a question..... :-)

What is the ruleset?? 

 

Can not feint to 1B or 3B from the rubber in OBR

Can not feint to 1B from the rubber in FED

 

Can always feint to 2B, all rules.....

BUT if F1 steps off first, he can fake to his heart's delight to any base.

By step off he means removes his pivot foot from the pitcher's plate by stepping back BEFORE breaking his hands IF they are together.
