Mask Porn?

For those of us who are fashion-impaired: I like the look of black mask with tan pads and silver mask with black pads. But which combo do you choose for what outfit you're wearing?
I like: silver mask/black pads for night games with a black shirt; black mask/black pads or black mask/tan pads with powder blue shirt; black mask/tan pads with black shirt for day games; I have a silver mask/2-tone navy pads for my HS games with a navy shirt; we have a cream shirt as an option, with which I will use black/black on cloudy days and black/tan on hot sunny days; we have a pink shirt, and thats black/black all the way; finally i have a PlusPOS charcoal mask with black TWs that i will mix in with my black, blue, or cream shirt when i am washing my other pads. Yeah sounds like a lot; Im a mask pad junky; I will switch pads constantly, even over a weekend of games- i hate putting on previously sweaty gear before washing them, a habit I got into when I was a goalie for my college team...

Does everyone actually carry a "back up" mask? I have a black Nike Ti and a Silver Low Profile Ti but I always find myself wearing the Nike and am tempted to get rid of the Wilson. Someone sell me on how likely it is that I'll damage my Nike in game and need a "back up."

Always. Always, always, always. Now, I take the approach of having several good, inexpensive masks ( +POS ZRO-G’s) and I treat them as “expendable”, and as such, have 4-5 masks. When I visit a venue, I always have at least two with me. In case my primary does suffer a bend or break, I employ my backup. The other possibility is if my scheduled PU partner forgets his mask, or it suffers a break or bend. I wouldn’t necessarily want him to use my “best” (in your case, rare, expensive, or prized) mask, but he can certainly use my backup.

The other possibility (that we don’t want to consider) is if you suffer an injury as PU. Another umpire (BU, standby, etc) can be employed. Most complexes have at least a balloon / raft hanging in the gear shed should your emergency replacement not have a personal protector (cup) or your CP won’t fit. Shinguards are easy to share / loan. But again, it’s tough to find a replacement mask to use when you’re suddenly not able to continue (concussion, broken collarbone, etc).

Yes,  I do and learned this lesson the hard way. In the heat of the summer I  removed my mask for a play at the plate and when I put my mask on it fell. Looked at the mask and the stitching that held the strap on the side of the mask tore loose. Tried to tie it and it wouldn't stay. Fortunately my BU had his gear and retrieved his mask for me. I bought another mask and new harness the next day.

Matte grey mask w/ tan pads = black shirts, grey shirts, or maroon, green, etc.

Black mask w/ tan pads = same as above

Sky blue mask w/ black pads = sky blue shirts, Bermuda blue shirts

Navy mask w/ navy pads = navy shirts, softball powder shirts, red shirts

Had a bar bender (eye opening bent open) in a fourth inning a few years ago, the mask was done. Glad I had my back up.

My new main rig thanks to @jwclubbie. Nike TI with leather Mizuno pads and Honigs 6" throat guard. I need to get a new harness for it and trying to decide if I want to add a visor or not.

Nice lookin rig. I would add a visor, why not? Doesn’t hurt.. the gray one would go nicely with that mask!

Our man Scott from Ump-attire working the plate for the Corvallis Regional Elimination game and I couldn't help but notice that he isn't wearing his force 3 v2, it looked more like a wilson ti with some tan team wendy pads.

I remember he said he went back to the Wilson this season cause of a busted bar on his Force3. I'm not sure if that was still the case or not.

Busted bar on a Force3?

Sorry... I meant more along the lines of a bent bar or busted weld. Someone with a better memory than mine (trust me... it won't be hard) might have a better recollection.

Nice collection there! Looks like you blacked out the W on the bottom pad of the Wilson Ti, if so how did you do that? Looks great!

Looks like he removed it. You just have to pull out the strings that hold it down

If thats the case, that’s pretty sharp! Need to find a new method other than blacking out logos with sharpie<_<

Probably just a standard seam ripper would work. And if you don't have that... small scissors would work as well.

Thanks! I used a small knife to get behind the logo and get the threads, but a seam ripper or scissors will work as others have stated.
