  1. I LOVE the new majestic shirts. got rid of that stripe (piping). officials are not the show, the less flashy we are the better.
  2. so is nike taking over from majestic for MLB umps?

  3. punched out Canseco tonight. yup.

If you work in a any level of Professional Baseball, Independent or Affiliated, keep your keyboard shut and don't write anything about it. It will come back and bite you in the arse.

yeah... only commenting here, among umpires. it was top tier of a rec league... so calm down gnhbua93. Anything else you wanna say to take the fun out of baseball?

  4. shame on me for thinking this actually had something to do with Winter Olympic Sports...

i once wore referee shin pads to umpire. felt dirty. though, loud whistles to signal balks would be jarringly exciting.

  7. Stay on top of conflicts, assign accordingly. Be open and accessible. Have the interests of the league in mind at all times. Smile. Encourage staff to wear numbers
  8. yeah Jax only makes fun of Afghans and his president.
  9. How I would have handled it (umpiring in the same league as original poster): Scenario 1: B: that was a forking bullsiht call! (loud enough for On Deck dude to hear) PU: *take off mask* "Sir, you have hurt my feelings!" (a tiny bit louder than him, with a tiny little sniff as though you're holding back tears) If he then says, Fork you and fork your feelings = Ejection If he walks away, somewhat confused but silent = problem solved. Scenario 2: B: that was a forking bullsiht call! (loud enough for On Deck dude to hear) PU: *take off mask, look at outside corner, shrug* "Matter of opeenyohn" (in your best Cajun Man voice) If he then said, Fork you and fork your stupid voices PU: "Grounds for Eejecsheeyon!" (then toss the dude) If I can't make them laugh while diffusing the seetuwaesheeyon, then at least I can have a good story for post game beers with buddies.
  10. I Ref hockey... In Ottawa, Canada. Up here Hockey is a year round thing. I spend more on Umpiring than Refereeing (two colours, plate gear, base gear, dry cleaning....etc), plus Ump gear is more fun to collect than Ref gear. Umps need to keep unis fresh and crisp, in hockey everyone wearing skates smells like 'hockey'. Both (men's leagues) pay about $25/hr here. I get hurt much more often on the ice, especially in lower divisions (blindly fire the puck around). I miss WAY more calls in rec hockey (doing the job of linesman AND Referee). I would conclude that Hockey is much more difficult... at times, there are 12 guys on the ice that are trying to hurt each other an get away with it, this is NEVER the case in Ball. Game management is very important in hockey.... but, if you blow a call on the ice, you can sorta just skate away from the abuse, whereas if you blow an out call on the bags, you basically have to stand in the middle of 9 dudes who are pretty pissed at you. The two sports are just so different that I always welcome the changing seasons. Phadnis
  11. You know you're umpiring too much when: Jerky, Gatorage and Spitz is what you eat for supper most nights...
