  1. I'm finally back at it. I umpired for about 5 years but changed careers and my schedule didn't allow me to do games. I went back to teaching and the first thing I did was to call my assignor and let him know that I was coming back. I have my first scrimmage today and I can't wait, except that it's going to be freezing.
  2. I figure ill be a pro by next season!!! haha Im actually aiming for not sucking.
  3. I also have a wife and young daughter. Last year I worked every day during the week and then tournaments on the weekends. It was a lot and it started to become difficult to balance family and work. This year I have a graduate class on Wednedsays and can't work but have stayed open for the other days. Ny idea is that I enjoy umpiring and it's good for my family. I just make sure that I make the best of the time I do have off from work and umpiring. I think you just have to decide what is right for you and be upfront about it.
  4. I haven't posted in a while but I'm back. Getting ready for the season in PA. Pretty sure March early games will be a wash because of all the snow. I am excited to comtinue to grow and perform well this year. It's my 3rd year and I have almost all JV and a few second teir varsity games and all are with the better guys in our chapter. It should be a good year.
  5. Without getting too political, we also dump billions into welfare. There is such an abuse of the system that most of it is fraudulent misuse of money. The people on welfare now all the laws and how to get more money for nothing. The more they get the more they expect. Investigate welfare claims and stop paying the people who are just living off of it and our entire country will rebound.
  6. Thanks everyone. I would love toove but that's not an option for many reasons. One we just bought a house and the market dropped so we owe more than its worth. Two we have a 1 year old and it would kill our parents as well as we would lose our support system. I guess I'll just try to tough it out on unemployment. I think I slept 3 hours total yesterday because my mind was racing about all of this.
  7. I am currently a teacher but getting laid off because of budget cuts. I'm not sure I want to teach anymore and was offered a job back in car sales. I know I'll make a lot more money selling cars but the hours could be a problem. Does anyone on here work in sales and manage to still ump. I really don't want to give up umpiring, but I also need to do what is best for my family.
  8. Thanks a lot Haid. That really helps and I think I'm leaning towards going and going to Harry's. I will take whatever I get and go wherever the road leads. If it's the minors great, if it's D1 great. Either way right now I want to go as far as I possibly can.
  9. UIC. Is there a time we could maybe chat. I'd love to get some insight from you.
  10. I don't know how you chose the name dumb dumb but with that answer you should change it to holySH*#iknoweverything. Thanks for the feedback. It really helped and I think I still want to go. Either I'll get college games or you will have to add a name of someone in their thirties.
  11. Im currently a teacher but it looks like I very well may be getting cut next year. I am really thinking about going to Evans school. Just trying to convince my wife and find the money. Am I too old at 31 to hope to make it to PBUC. If I do make it would I possibly get an area where I live?
  12. I have my first varsity game tomorrow. Im really excited and not too nervous. Things have been going well and I feel very comfortable with my mechanics. The funny thing is that I have meetings at work until 4 which is when the game starts so I took a sick day because I didn't want to give the game back. Man I love this hobby.
  13. I found that exact nail polish and it worked amazingly well. You can't tell I painted it it looks like they came that way.
  14. Thanks Kevin ill try that. Then I'll put the rest in my awesome bucket of supplies.
  15. My organization requires all black shoes but I have the new balance with the white N. What's the best way to cover it? Some people have said to use markers but I don't want them to look like SH*#. Is there anything else or does marker work?
  16. It seems they were just saying there should be more umpires out there not that he did anything wrong. I don't think any extra umpires would have helped but that's all they said.
  17. Can he still be in contact with the rubber, or does he need to step off?
  18. Please let me also extend another thank you for the same reasons. Everyone on here has been helpful, informative and accommodating. I passed my test and understand umpiring so much more after finding this board. I've also gotten comments on my understanding so early in my career and this site is a HUGE reason for this. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. P.S Special thanks to K Finn for the awesome supply bucket. I am always preppared now.
  19. I think if you want to officiate any level of any sport you should seek out the rules. No one is ever forced to do this job so take it seriously and put in some effort. Just my 2 cents.
  20. Can someone please give a definition of what a Smitty is? I've seen the term and understand that it's not good but I'm not sure what qualifies an umpire as a Smitty.
  21. I had my fiirst two HS JV games this year as well. I was definitely nervous and excited, but was surprised because the play wasn't as fast as I thought it would be. I did 14u and 16u in a very competitive fall league and their level of play was as good if not better so it wasn't a huge jump. For me I just stayed very focused on each play and where I needed to be and what my responsibilities were and it was fine. With a one man crew its easier in the fact that you have everything but harder because you have everything. haha great advice right. Just hustle and let the coaches know your alone and you will do your best.
  22. I just had my first scrimmage of the year. It ended 29-2 and could have been much worse. It went 5 innings in 2.5 hrs. OMG what a long terrible game to watch. The winning team would only let their runners move one base no matter where the ball was hit. But it was still fun being out there and getting in the right spots.
  23. I've used it a few times and love it. I wish it were used more often also. Maybe if we could chat in a seperate box and browse the forum at the same time it would be used more.
  24. The more I think about this guy the more I feel bad for him. He loves being an umpire and has no clue how bad he is. I don't know that it was edited to get under umpires skin I think he just does everything that does that naturally. Especially his overemphatic strike call.
  25. The problem is this guy is in the stage of knowledge where he doesnt know what he doesn't know. He thinks he knows everything and maybe eventually he will pick up a book that shows him what umpiring really is. When I started my first few months I didn't know that there were mechanics so I certainly didn't know what good mechanics were. He also seems like he may be slow/have social issues. He does seem clueless about the rules which is also a problem.
