  1. You went the opposite direction as I. I went from playing, to Dad watching, to Dad coaching, to umpire… mainly because while watching and coaching my kids, there were too many plays like this, and some more basic plays that made me say ” I can do better than half these guys….. at least I know the basic rules”.
  2. Batter backed up, wasn’t running to first. I have interference. Batter out , runners return. If the batter bunted and started running to 1b, and tangles with the catcher I would have nothing ( tangle/ untangle) as long as neither player did anything intentional. Back to the OP, batter was not running , and interference does not have to be intentional in this case.
  3. He’ll also more than likely own one faded, wrinkled navy shirt and proudly tell you he hasn’t spent money on gear or uniform in years.
  4. Congrats on the first scrimmage. Lots of good advice here. Up above you mentioned breathing, and that reminds me of one thing that probably helped my ball/ strikes calls more than anything. deep inhale as the pitcher sets. Exhale slowly as the pitch is delivered. Track with the eyes. The breathing and steady head just makes the ball so much easier to track.
  5. I would love to know if this is indeed how MLB wants this called. Would Manfred and his rules committee agree this is OBS? Do they REALLY want this play called OBS when a runner is nowhere near the bag and clearly not impeded by the fielder’s actions ? Or are they instructed to “over call “ this in ST so when it truly is OBS in the regular season people won’t lose their minds?
  6. Football players don’t get their panties in a bunch or want to fight the opposing team when their opponent scores and spikes a football. Flip a bat at the opponent, flex and yell something into their dugout, and the next thing you know there’s 64 kids on the field screaming and yelling at each other. They brought it on themselves.
  7. There’s no balk here. He can shake his head all he wants. To your umpire friend… please remind him deception is not a balk. I’m not sure how this can lead to a quick pitch. He’s stretching and coming set, right? Unless he’s stretching and coming set before the batter is in the box, which PU should put a stop to immediately to begin with.
  8. I believe the theory is they can frame the low pitch better. Catch the ball lower with the mitt still thumb down
  9. No.. But a fielder charging a slow hopper, and a runner converging to the same spot, who has to yield and who has the "right of way", C'mon , you know this as well as I do. It most certainly does... 6.01(a) Penalty for interference comment. It's the only legitimate answer as to why no interference was called here That's for interfering with a throw.
  10. Maybe not verbatim. But That’s virtually the definition of interference.
  11. 100% he didn’t see the ball hit his leg. So we’ll leave that out of his call. I could buy into justifiying a no call if you tell me the runner had contact with the bag when he unintentionally hinders F6. Justifiying a no call here by saying the runner is allowed to run in front of fielder? I can’t go along with that on this play.
  12. Interesting. I guess something like this may work?
  13. Not only did the ball hit the runner’s leg, he clearly hinders f6 from a clean opportunity field the ball as he is running back to the bag . Big difference between this play and a runner running in front of fielder when a fielder is not charging the ground ball. I’m just wondering the thought process that leads to a non call here.
  14. I don’t want to hijack the thread anymore than we have already. But yeah there’s some cool red stitches on my forearm. No NCAA logo though. 🤣
  15. That was after the game...Pre ice. This morning it's almost gone. (The pretty colors haven't started yet 😄)
  16. I don’t work the little kids anymore, but I don’t find FED games too bad in general. The worst? 16-18 travel tournament parents. They want the MLB zone for their hitters, and an 8u zone for their pitchers.
  17. You mean something like this???. From today. It wasn’t a spiked 0-2 pitch… it was completely missed inside fastball. I told f2 “you gotta catch it before you can frame it🙄
  18. Or… 0-2 , two outs, followed by 5 pick off throws to 1b. 😤
  19. #1 answer…. Forearm for me.
  20. Especially in this day and age of pitch counts. I understand don’t groove one down the middle 0-2, but OTOH, don’t throw it 8” off the plate or in the dirt either.
  21. That's fuzzy math. You're already using 2:40 per inning. making it 120 seconds is only adding 80 seconds per inning. That's less than 10 minutes added. And 120 means Batter in the box and pitcher ready to throw at 120. If you're getting that done in 80 seconds with HS kids, congratulations.
  22. You’re right. But my high school experience is this is the one balk rule coaches are aware of. They jump on the “going to mouth on the rubber balk” like no one’s business.
