    Parents and Assistants Save Him

11u, Fed Rules with mods, bottom of the 1st, I''m PU. Batter sharply fouls pitch off the catchers glove for a foul ball, which I call immediately. Offensive HC wants Catcher Interference. He comes down and asks, I say I don't have it, he goes on for me to ask my partner (who was in A), I say (in not my strongest moment) "no, what will he have 70 feet away that I don't have." Coach keeps going on so I give him the stop sign and tell him that's enough while starting to move towards the first base line (away from the third base coach box where he started). He starts to wind up again for another round, and I start to mentally prepare myself to issue the written warning to put him in the dugout the rest of the game, however, what seems to be all of his parents and assistants, in unison, (as if this is rehearsed for this situation) say his first name and some of his assistants plead for him to walk away. And he listens to them and returns to his box. Game ends without further incident. Just never had that happen after all these years.

    Concerning Coach Pitch...

Most of the time, coach pitch is like stealing money. But when it gets bad, it gets really bad.

    Passed my Exam

As I alluded to in a post about taking some time off, I was taking an exam for work, my PE exam. Learned today all my studying paid off, I passed. Hopefully this means I can get out more on the field this spring, as if I had to retake it, I would of lost all my preseason prep (would of done bare minimum for association) and games through most of April.

    Burn out

This year, I decided that it wasn't going to be all baseball all the time. If something was going on I wanted to do, I blocked the date. I was working on a real stressful project at work, so no after work ball. I am studying for a professional licensing exam right now, so no fall ball. Guess what? I feel it has been great. I have more than one hobby now. I was able to sussesfully finish my stressful project without wearing myself too thin. I will (hopefully) pass my exam. And I got to still enjoy umpiring ball. While I also have a job that prevents calling high school ball, I have tried to make the most of the opportunities I do have. Sometimes a step back is needed. However, before shutting it off completely, maybe consider moderation. It has kept me in the game, I know if I wouldn't of moderated, I would of quit.

    Do you let these go?

One time, 16u game, batter takes strike one on outer edge of plate. Once I call it he decides to take up art. I immediately eject him. Coach says nothing, only complained mildly when I called an out because he had no subs (per tournament rules). After game UIC for tournament organization stops by our changing area (it was in an old minor league park that had a tiny umpire room) and asks is how it went. Tell him good but he will be getting a report from me later that evening, told him the story of our aspiring artist. His exact quote "well, he should of drawn that line to the parking lot because that is where he is going every time."

    Rain, No Pay

Ours matters on notification period by the different leagues (range is 1.5 hours to 3 hours) for teams to notify assigner who then communicates it by Arbiter or text/phone. Half game fee to umpires if they don't comply billed from the association. Most of our leagues collect a bond from the teams for these situations and most league rules state they have to renew their bond within a stated timeframe (usually about a week) or they can no longer play games. Works pretty well, I had one game on a perfect sunny day called 2 hours before game, assigner texts me and says those games cancelled go to this other site I need you there. I wasn't expecting it but got my show up fee because of the late cancel. Tournaments are a bit of a different story, pretty much you have to start a game to get the fee, and cancellation windows are tighter, but never had an issue of not being notified.

One of the tournaments I worked this year said to eject any offender for time wasting, and the tournament director could forfeit the game to the non-offending team. Nothing about stopping the clock. Other ones are silent. Other than not allowing for the stalling tactics to happen (ending conferences quickly if you are sure they are stalling, getting batter in box, etc.) ejection is really your only legal tool IMO unless clearly called out on white sheet or by tournament director.

    How much rope?

You gave him enough rope to hang himself (and he was on his way to doing so), but coach did his job, stayed the execution, and cut the rope off. Wish we had more coaches like that, discounting his comment you should of EJed. And I wonder why he would want that with playoffs coming up and mandetory suspensions.
  10. Since Tapatalk stopped working, it has been awhile. Getting some ball in, having great days and a few not so great, but finally getting a grove working weekend ball. But good news and bad news came last week. SWMBO got her dream job, but it will mean we will have to move to make our commutes manageable. It will also make it unfeasible to continue to call games for the great group I have been calling ball with for the last three years. The worse part is that the move will probably occur in July or August, meaning an early end to my year, again (had one last year due to injury), as most groups tell you "call us in January" unless they are really hurting. Any advice on keeping the not calling games blues away?

    How much latitude?

New pitcher brought in in the middle of an inning. His warm up pitches didn't even begin until he was on the mound for at least 2 minutes, being trained by his coach to pitch from the set position without balking. Then after each of the first 3-4 pitches, there was more instruction, as he was initially having difficulty grasping the concept of starting and stopping properly. This took at least 4-5 minutes. I normally move this along. He is making a change, get warm ups started asap. He gets his eight, coach can't slow him down. Charge a conference after giving coach warning (not required, but good preventative umpiring) if he persists. If he becomes unglued, go through your procedure for dealing with problem coaches. 14. 9u Consolation Bracket Championship game, I am BU. Through the course of the game, we have a pitcher take a real screamer to the arm (left game, found out he was ok afterward), a shortstop take a line drive to the knee (becomes EH), and another pitcher take one to shin (becomes EH). All on the same team. My partner, right when he is going to put the ball back in play after the third one, says "OK, now no one else get hurt." First pitch is fouled off of PU's cup. I couldn't help myself, I am laughing on the infield. As we are walking to the car after the game, he says "should of just kept my trap shut, I jinxed myself."

    The rats invaded....the SUV

Ok, I am back after a break (work is a bear, and it will not be getting any better). But the rats decided to strike early this year. Ok, it was more like a mouse. Little rodent got into the SUV. Chewed through a bag of holiday brownies from my mom and some ketchup packets that SWMBO left in the door. Sticky traps worked like a charm (have the picture, but won't post here in case people are squeamish). Just trying to figure out time to get it in to get detailed to clean up the mess he caused. Just hope it isn't a bad omen to the season.

Why do injuries come at the worst time?

I can think of a few that mainly involve large sporting events on TV. The injury has to be bad enough to stay home from work but not bad enough that the event can be enjoyed. : Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Why do injuries come at the worst time?

Our association has its last huge tournament this weekend (since it is a three day weekend). I get a nice haul of games. Then my left foot goes "I am going to give you a nice shot of pain every step you take." Grrrr, something always seems to go wrong when things are going great. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    The Postseason Strike Zone

As a manager or player, I would have no problem with that pitch being calling a strike by an objective monitoring system. The reason we don't call that a strike is mostly because we don't want to be yelled at. Computers don't mind being yelled at, so if anything, I think this is a perfect example of why computers should call balls and strikes. Until bat meets computer. A former mlb umpire said it, that there can never be a machine because the players would destroy it when the call didn't go their way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
