  1. I can't be 100%, but you could tell that the reason he didn't throw the ball was because it would have hit the batter crossing in front....probably in the face or chest. He wound up to throw, but stopped short. He threw once the batter cleared the space, just a hair too late to get the runner. It was a weird situation...even the third base coach was taken aback by the kid tagging and trying to score.
  2. Had one of those situations that would only happen in younger leagues. 1 out, runner on 3rd. Batter hits a soft fly to F3 in foul territory (just outside the 1b line). F3 catches it, and in a fashion that could only happen with 3rd graders, R3 tags and heads home. The batter, who essentially only made it out of the batters box, walks back to his dugout on the 3b side, right in front of the plate. F3 starts to throw home to get the runner, but hesitates because he didn't want to hit the batter with the ball. His throw is late and the run scores. There was never any contact made. The batter didn't even know what was going on. Should I have called obstruction on the batter and called the runner out? Does there have to be contact or deliberate action for it to be called? Kind of got stuck between interpretation and what rules apply. Any help on how this should have been correctly called?
  3. I honestly didn't know they existed. They may be just t-shirts that the two guys decided to wear. I find it hard to believe that the tournament (which is a BIG one) allowed them to wear those. They don't seem to be "regulation" to me. :notworthy:
  4. Thanks for the clarification, JM. I think what got to me the most was that this guy had missed no less than 4 "no pause on set" from the stretch position (13U AA, no reason to let this go). But he was ALL OVER this one!
  5. Wanted to know what you guys thought of this "uniform". Both of the umpires on the field were wearing them. All other fields in the complex, the umps were wearing standard blues....
  6. If, by some miracle, F5 caught the ball, he would have had to take 3-4 steps to get to the runner or the bag. There was no way he could have made a play on the runner, as he had a "normal" lead. If the runner had broke for home, he might have had him in a rundown. This might be the ultimate HTBT play. :notworthy:
  7. Odd situation happened in a tournament yesterday. For the record, I was not umpiring but coaching. R3, defense is on the ready for a squeeze but the batter hasn't squared. Pitcher kicks, using a good move to try to pick off R3. 3B turns his attention to the batter and starts to charge, unaware that the pickoff move has been made. Pitcher still throws the ball, and it hits 3B in the glove, but he had no idea the ball was coming. 3B was about 8 feet off the bag, in-between the mound and the base. Ball hits him, bounces harmlessly in front of him. BU calls this a balk, saying that he had to be able to make a play. Not 100% that I agree with him, but wanted to see what the consensus is with my trusted fellows here on the forum. I think everyone on the field was confused, very odd situation. I don't think I would have called it a balk, but that would have been from a "benefit of the doubt" judgement instead of a rules-based judgement. What do you guys think?
  8. Pet Peeve for me: If I am wearing sunglasses: "Hey, Blue!! Take off your sunglasses!!!!" If I am not wearing sunglasses" "Hey, Blue!! Get some glasses!!!"
  9. I am with the OP. The biggest problem that I have is that local tournaments rarely, if ever, have any type of feedback system set up to make the umpires better. I worked a few games with an "experienced" ump who never made any hand signals. Just said "Out" and "Safe"...but I was the junior ump, and am still trying to feel my place out in our association, so I didn't say anything (which I should have). I am going to work with the UIC of our association to see if we can set up some sort of feedback system to help the umpires get better, but this my frustration that I tend to deal with a lot. I know I am not perfect, but I want to get better.
  10. Hey, everyone...new to the forums, and I had one this weekend that was pretty good..I was done with my 8U game, waiting for the next one to start. The 8U field is right next to the 14U field, and I was talking with the UIC when one of the mothers from a 14U team came and asked to speak with her (the UIC). The mother then asked the UIC to do something about the umpire behind the plate, because "the strikes he is calling for them, he is calling them balls for us". I guess she wanted the UIC to go down there, stop the game, and tell the guy to stop being such a meanie and call more strikes for the other team. The best part was the UIC's response: I would recommend that your pitcher throw more strikes. Of course, this was said after the mom went back to her position in the stands, but me and the rest of the umpires had a good solid laugh at that one. Anyway, thanks for having me and I look forward to more conversations in the future.
