  2. Brothers and sisters Steve aka @grayhawk has sustained what sounds like serious injuries in a freak accident. Info below from an email sent to our association members: Just this morning, Steve stopped by Windrow Park in support of two of our finest working a tournament Semi-final game. While the crew was getting dressed in the parking lot, Steve sat in one their chairs. The chair then broke, which caused Steve's neck to snap back as he fell to the ground. This created some immediate back pain, but did not appear to be serious at the time. Some hours later Steve began to lose all feeling in his legs and arms, and was admitted to Saddleback Medical Center. He is currently undergoing surgery to remove a disc in his back that the Dr's feel is causing the inflammation on the nerves which led to his condition. I briefly spoke w/ Steve and his wife, Christine, just before surgery, and they said assuming all goes well, another surgery will be needed to insert pins & screws. The recovery process could take a very long time. I know Steve personally and I know that many of you have formed a relationship with him via this very site, so I know many of you would want to know about this tragedy and would want to add him to your prayers. @Magic who is also our association VP I am sure is in contact with his family as well. When additional information is available, I am sure one of us will share it.... Prayers to Steve and his family.

  3. Hey all. Like the post last January, I have been selected to do the LLWS this year. I have been keeping a blog of the year, and all of the stuff that happens. All 16 umpires have been to Williamsport for an orientation, we hung out for 5 days and became friends. I will be posting my schedule on the blog during the week, there is a listing of the umpires, the schedule, some links and a few pictures on there. Feel free to stop by to check it out. http://www.easternmaineumpires.org/troylare.html Call 'em like you see 'em - Troy

  4. Congratulations. Look forward to reading about your experiences. Be careful with your blog! 2015 LLWS

  5. You gave them a chance to address it. They chose to act like ass hats. If F1 never comes set because something was moving, issue the warning as directed. If F1 moves after coming set, issue the warning as directed. When the arrogant d-bags bark about it tell them why it's a balk- no stop or start/stop. Next time F1 does it, balk him. Sooner or later some one will address it with F1. Sometimes you just need to umpire. Just my .02. YMMV.

  6. @Gil, can something please be done about that Orville dude? His flaming is getting to the point of annoying!

  7. Even during the HS season, at least in my experience, it has been rare to be offered drinks by the teams or schools. I don't want to trust they will, so I bring my own mini bar to the party.

  8. Games this weekend were 100+... 1st game on the dish I went through 5 water bottles and 1 sports drink. Back at the car, another 2 bottles of water and a sports drink. Next game on the bags went through my ice water thermos and another 2 water bottles. Never cramped up, felt like cramping or experienced other issues... just was DAMN hot! And for those old school guys who think bringing water on to the field is 'weak' or 'not good optics'... pound sand. When umpiring games starts paying my mortgage and all the other bills, then maybe I will worry about that optic.... and at mid-40's I don't think umpiring will anytime soon be paying my way!

  9. I definitely do not have interference. The defensive team made a poor throw, hit the runner with the ball and then the DHC wants him called out since he grabbed his body where he was hit, just by happenstance delaying the ball dropping to the ground? Sorry coach... I am not bailing your team out that far. I have nothing on this play other than a safe at first and play on.

  10. I agree with your logic in all the points you made. It wasn't intentional, and it wasn't lodged. Play on.

  11. No need to take our word for it or the word of any of your "very experienced" umpires—the answer to your question is in the rule book. OBR rule 5.08 Comment (the very last paragraph in rule 5.08(b). APPROVED RULING: One out, Jones on third, Smith on first, and Brown flies out to right field. Two outs. Jones tags up and scores after the catch. Smith attempted to return to first but the right fielder’s throw beat him to the base. Three outs. But Jones scored before the throw to catch Smith reached first base, hence Jones’ run counts. It was not a force play.

  12. We got the rules from LL. Generic info only.

  13. The BU would have the tag-ups. If you started in C, then the ball (catch) would be in front of you (you would see the back of the fielder), the catch should be handled by PU. Communication is the key - don't get lulled into a routine play, because nothing is routine. Sounds like the wind was an issue, so you may not have a routine play - time for head on a swivel.

  14. Congrats man! I believe that you can still get evaluated on your field work as well. The forms that we use from LL to evaluate just have you list the bases you did. Just because you didn't get a plate, shouldn't hurt you. If you did a good job on the bases, then you still have a chance to move up.

  16. I would think PU has it all. PU has IFF, catch (first touch), tag up of R2 and covering 3B. You should have moved toward 3rd and got first touch and R1, and try to help on R2. Tough one! Were you guys communicating? JC, Was IFF called?

  17. Your job to see tag ups of R1 and R2. Quick glance over your shoulder on the catch. Sounds like you, as well as the defense, encountered the umpire's worst enemy... surprise. Don't allow yourself to be surprised.

  18. Sadly, the worse part of this tale was the coaches and their reaction. The best answer would have been to tell you "thank you" and that they would say something to the kid, even if they had no plans to do so. By spouting off like that, they just created an environment where any calls you make there after will be perceived to be aggressive towards their team and they will use that as justification for acting like jerks. In due course an ejection will be forthcoming and they will complain to high heaven that you were just being vengeful... No good deed goes unpunished as they say. Next time, if you think it is a balk, call the balk. If it is not a balk, ignore it. At 11, most of the kids can't figure out how to come completely still, not turn their shoulders a little when set and trying to see 1st etc...

  19. Update sent from our association: As it turned out, due the seriousness of his condition, his surgeon determined that his best chance for recovery was to immediately remove the herniated disc in the C6-C7 vertebrae of the neck which was pinching the blood vessels in the spinal cord. If not treated aggressively, the loss of blood flow in the tissues of the spinal column could cause severe damage and limit his ability to walk and to perform basic motor functions. The procedure took 6 1/2 hours to perform, and his Dr. did insert rods & pins to help stabilize. The good news is an additional surgery should now not be needed. He is able to move the toes on his left foot, but not the right (though he does have some sensation). His grip with the left hand is strong, not so much with his right and he's having quite a bit of left arm pain that will probably exist for some time to come. Next step is to start therapy and get him out of ICU. I cannot even begin to tell you how much he misses baseball already, but he's focused now on just being able to walk again. The recovery process will long, difficult and slow. He really enjoys having visitors. The only limitations are the # that can visit him in ICU at a time. The hospital policy is 2 visitors at any one time, but the nursing staff is able to stretch the rules a bit as they did today. Also, should you stop in, he may be asleep as he's under constant management for the pain. Many of you have reached out to me wanting to know what you can do. Christine told me that she & Steve feel tremendous strength from prayer. Please continue to pray for them both. He'd also like to see his brothers in the umpiring community for a visit. It has also been suggested that once Steve is able to go home, the OCBOA brotherhood provide home-cooked, or restaurant food for delivery. Christine will certainly have her hands full, and I know the family would appreciate that very much. If you are able to help, please email me and I will keep a list and provide further details when able.

  20. @grayhawk is the one responsible for me starting my umpiring career. He was the UIC for the little league I started with. The good news in this is that he is doing much better after his surgery, doing more light movements every day. We are all here for you, grayhawk

  21. I'd report this asshat to anyone who will listen. Is this jackass really willing to risk the lives of all his players because he might lose the game? JFC I played baseball with a guy who was killed by lightning about 25 years ago. The entire defensive team was knocked to the ground...he never got up. Most if not all the rules about lightning for Canadian softball and baseball were revamped (or emphasized for actual enforcement) due to that incident. You don't F*#K with nature...she don't care how old you are, what your plans are, how nice you are. And you can't outrun it.

  22. I am supposed to be getting a 13" AA CP and leg guards (not sure of size on those yet). I'll post pics when I get as they'll most likely both be up for sale.

  23. And BT_Blue, just to catch you up on a little of the crew history.c Boise Hawks at Tri-City Dust Devils. On July 2, in the top of the 7th inning, Boise 10th round draft pick, number 306 overall by the Colorado Rockies, bonus baby slotted for $138,000 but signed for $150,000, from the Oklahoma Sooners, Cade Harris, was summarily ejected by taking care of business plate umpire Emma Charlesworth-Seilers after striking out swinging to end the top of the inning. In 62 at bats so far this year, the eagle eye Harris has 21 walks, but also 21 strike outs. Harris had just finished going O for 4 for the night with a swinging strikeout in the 1st, a called 3rd strike in the 2nd and a fly out in the 5th, before his dismissal from the contest in the 7th. Best I can do. P.S. 55 fans had left there seats and were already at the hot dog stand while 100 were lined up for for the facilities usage and missed the excitement and the take me out to the ball game song. You are on your own from here on out. added below 7/25--- On July 6th in a game between Vancouver and home team Everett AquaSox, in the bottom of the 3rd inning HPU Emma Charlesworth-Seilers took care of business bby dismissing Everett AquaSox manager Jose Moreno during a dispute. On July 14th in a game between Tri-City and home team Hillsboro, in the top of the 5th inning, base umpire Emma Charlesworth-Seilers took care of business by dismissing Tri-City Dust Devil Manager Mike McCoy during a dispute. As a side note, since Jen Pawol has moved up to Long A in the MWL now, while she was in the Short A NYP last year (2017), Jen had to take care of business as the HPU on July 14 and 31st, and again in August on the 23 and 31st, by dismissing 1 player in each of those games and 1 hitting coach on July 31st, over balls and strikes for the year. Updated 12/15/18. Back to basketball. 2 more women hired full time by NBA. Still haven't seen a D1 woman basketball official promoted to a D1 men's staff, which is both a step up in achievement advancement and in financial opportunity advancement. Just pitiful on the various 'D1 Men's Conferences' to keep the women down on the farm with no possibility of achieving the highest plateau of NCAA Basketball Officiating. Look at all the men in the D1 Women program. Where is that D1 men's mentoring and advancement program for the women, just like in the NBA. The NCAA should have beaten the NBA by a mile with 300+ teams at D1 and a much much higher total staff numbers needed than the NBA. They do not want it to happen, pure and simple. They don't want your daughter to have the same opportunity that their dad's have. Never will, or it would have been done long ago with the D1 women feeder system right in front of their noses, just like the WNBA program. Keep them down in opportunity level they can obtain professionally and in financial opportunity they can obtain. Just pathetic/pitiful, and totally unconscionably designed/premeditated/intentional, or it would not be this way.

  25. Thanks All! I was asked to do a LL elim game. We had 2 lightning delays. I asked if they went by some weather app or the 30 min delay between each strike. No one could answer so we waited 30 mins for each delay. During the second delay, the VT coach who was losing and in jeopardy of losing the game because the game was official at this point, wanted the delay shortened, of course, because it was getting dark. He comes to me after 15 mins and says, "they found the rule and it states that 30 mins is only a recommendation". I told him, "Well, I'm recommending 30 mins".

  27. The purpose is to punish the person who made the infraction, and, to some degree, make some attempt to "make the defense whole" - not to reward the defense like they won the Extra Out Lottery. In short, if the runner had not interfered the defense would have made one out...so, the end result of the play should be one out to the offense (that it's the runner instead of the batter is irrelevant). The interference can often have the additional penalty of pushing the offense back 90 or even 180 feet - not always, but sometimes. Throwing in an additional out is too punitive. If the interference prevented a double play, then it would be reasonable to give two outs. You start throwing in additional outs then you're inviting the defense to try to create interference situations, and now you have more stuff on your plate to judge, and it just makes a mockery of the game.
