  1. A pitcher named Thrower is not a good sign.

  2. 33 years. How many I've ejected? Can't say; I usually forget about them 2 days after. How many I didn't eject, but should have? 11. I remember each and every one of them.

  4. The FM4000 Magnesium has been my primary mask this year. It's very light, won't bend (according to @MadMax and his materials science knowledge), and the pads are really comfortable. Yeah they're massive but they're comfy. The bottom pad has a plastic plate in front so that the blade-like bars hit the plastic and distribute the force instead of having a localized impact (right, Max?). Now the top pad is tiny because the mask is designed for catchers, and they wear a helmet. Mike Everitt got drilled on the top of his FM4000MAG and was concussed. I've only taken one good shot to the jaw and I didn't see sparks fly. I didn't feel the impact either, so the mask did its job. I'm pretty sure the top of my head isn't exposed when I wear this mask, but I'll double check in a mirror sometime.

  6. Man I'm sure this is no razzed harness, but like it better than the WV harness, that I can say thru trying both on I like the feel of this CP a lot, doesn't feel like I got shoulder pads on, very form fitting Bottom plates near bottom ribs wrap around your torso so nicely Before ordering, I thought I'd develop an affair that is truely, deep, with this CP I shouldn't get all googly yet still in honeymoon phase, lol. But anyway, I'd give it 5 stars pre-use, compared to the CPS I've tried on Just seems to offer maximum protection, as MAD MAX the guru stated, in a very nice for fitting low profile CP AND FOR WHAT...$76 reg. Retail price Just started this umpiring game, but Adams been in tha game, making MOVES, POSITIVE ONES, IN THE AREA OF CHEST PROTECTORS THIS IS PERFECT EXAMPLE

  8. You mean like this, from OBR: A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher’s hands and is legally caught.

  9. That would be interesting. I don't ever think I've seen a 16-foot long chest protector.

  10. If we're counting JV, I had a 36-0 game. Our state (thankfully) has a 15-after-3 mercy rule, and that was the final after 2.5 innings (home team ahead). 20-0 after the first inning. Second inning I asked the HTHC if I could make his zone ridiculously huge and he agreed. One of the first batters comes up and the pitch is over his eyeballs. *strike* He looks at me and says "that was over my head". I said "yep. Strike".

  11. Glad I got mine when I did As others have pointed out, the shoulder plates should be higher. Otherwise, it's great. Being cooler has not been put to the test yet, but it's light and form fitting. Wish it came in a 16' or 17', I'm 6'2, 210, but I do have a little beer belly protection

  12. I feel your pain, brother. Even when it's mid-summer and the skinny guys want to wear blue, I say "nope, let's wear black". Besides, it matches my belt, shoes, and indicator!

  13. From what I have heard, Tim is back working with the group in Portland again. He had fallen on hard times after hanging up the gear. But sounds like he is back on his feet and in charge of training.

  16. I alluded to it in my other post. You can blame the star player's coach almost as much as you can blame the coaches that are walking him. Coaches show up at a game with this superstar in their lineup (often through dumb luck of when the kid was born and what his address is) and then just expect to show up for games and have this one kid produce four or more runs every game, and think they are coaching geniuses when they win the league or state or whatever. You want other teams to stop walking your star player, make sure your other kids can hit. Surround your star player with other kids who may not be future pros, but can hit very well...then coaches will either be forced to pitch to him and take their chances, or be punished by the other players who don't get walked. You want to talk about what's good for youth baseball, or not good for youth baseball, it's showing up with a once in a generation phenom on your team and riding him to a state championship. It's supposed to be a team sport. So, coaches are left with one choice to deal with the extreme advantage that another team may have in the lineup and make the rest of the team beat them. Because we're not going to advocate limiting the star player's playing time, or the number of home runs he can hit in a game, anymore than we're going to advocate limiting the IBB's against him I've coached at various levels as well - from community to national championships - facing, and beating, many of the best teams Canada and the US has had to offer. And, more importantly, I've actually played the game. From youth to semi-pro. And there's one universal truth at every age level and skill level - not based on psychological studies, or what parents hope...but based on surveys of the kids themselves, at all ages, of why they play sports...fun is spelled W-I-N. And given the choice between winning with walking the best player, and losing with facing the best player, 9 kids out of 10 will take the win every day and twice on Sunday. Contrary to popular belief, losing doesn't build character, winning does. All losing should do is teach you you hate to lose.

  19. As far as I am aware. That is the only difference. I believe the frames are the exact same. I also want to say, somewhere on here, @MadMax went in depth about the difference. But I am not sure where.

  21. Sorry, it was you who talked up your vast viewing experience of college and pro baseball to back up your claim that 4-hole batters almost always get pitched to. Rich Ives was obviously making the point that they're not the same. Sometime in your amazing content consumption career, it seems like you'd have come across some footage of Barry Bonds in the early 2000's, particularly in 2004 when Bonds was IBB'ed 120 times in one season). Look it up. In fact, since 2000, Bonds and Josh Hamilton were both walked with the bases loaded, and both times their opponents won the game. Baseball is a game with two levels: at its root, players engage in a series of individual match-ups; in a wider scope, coaches try to optimize those individual matchups. In every sport, at every level, coaches use strategy to neutralize an outrageous 1-player advantage, usually saying they want to "make someone else beat us." They feel like it puts them in a better position to win, which is fun; in the immortal words of Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh: "I love winning, I [really] love winning! You know what I'm saying? It's, like, better than losing?" And as for the absolutely ridiculous juxtaposition of adding "with all due respect" before calling me an idiot, well, I think the other readers can draw a suitable conclusion.

  23. Yes - to each his own on how they like they're pants to look and fit. I'm 6'3" and 240. I wear an XL on the bases and XXL on the plate. I've left my plant pants alone to give me more room to move around with F3 shins on. My base pants - when I got them hemmed, I had them TAPER the leg to fit the way that I liked them. Custom fit for the umpire that wears the pants. I love the Poly Spandex material. Glad you found a combo fit for you that you like.

  25. I'm not sure what your distinction is between defensive vs intentional swing. The key is whether it was a legitimate attempt to strike or hit the ball. If in the judgment of the umpire, the swing is an attempt to hit the ball, it's a dead ball and a strike in all circumstances. If strike three, the batter is out. If the umpire judges that it wasn't an attempt to hit the ball but rather evasive action or something, then the umpire could (and likely would) award the batter 1B. If however, the umpire felt that the batter permitted the ball to hit him (such as stepping into the pitch with the intention of getting hit), then the batter could be kept at the plate with a ball added to the count. Finally, if the pitch was in the strike zone, it would be a strike even if the batter didn't intend to be hit.

  26. HS Varsity game. Im PU. Bot 6. Player takes a called K3 over the outside corner. Draws a line in the dirt and gets run. After the game I see a woman in a sweatshirt of that team coming over to my car. I was starting to think that id have to make a quick exit and get changed at wawa but to my surprise she said she was the players mother and asked for my email address to have him apologize for me. That night this popped into my inbox. (personal information redacted) Dear Mr. BRUMP, I apologize for losing control of my emotions during the second game today. My behavior was inappropriate. I understand that I need to handle my emotions, especially in high-intensity situations, better in the future. I meant no disrespect to you or to the game. I acknowledge that drawing a line where I thought the pitch should be called was wrong as it showed you up. My actions do not align with my values, and I regret disappointing my parents, and letting down my team. I will treat this experience as a valuable lesson going forward in this season, throughout my college career, and beyond. Sincerely, First Name Last Name Somewhere in NJ High School ‘18

  28. Just FYI, the reason the all black mask looks like it has a longer throat guard than the black and grey is because it doesn't have the wrap-around pads. The black and grey one does have wrap-arounds giving it the illusion that it has a shorter throat guard.
