  1. 3 "time outs"?...per game? per inning? Offensive conferences? Catchers talking to the pitcher? You mean to tell me they're gonna stop an F2 from talking to F1 because he's out of "time outs?" Please!! Intentional walks FED style? Really?? Are there so many IBB that we need to change this? And how are you going to enforce 20 seconds to make a pitch if there's runners on base? That just seems ridiculous. Does the clock restart if he throws to 1st? What if he steps off? What if he feints to 2nd? Does the clock stop? All asinine ideas if you ask me. Keep the batter in the box, enforce the 12 second rule with no runners on base. No problem with 2:30 for a pitching change, or 2:05 between innings. Other than that, I think you're messing way too much with the game.

  2. A. Switching balls doesn't take any time. B. Not switching balls gives the pitcher an advantage.

  6. I don't think anyone can really go wrong by carrying a back up of anything. Most gear bags now have plenty of room for a back up chest protector as well as back up masks and shins. I carry two chest protectors as well as two masks. I have one primary mask and a back up mask that I use occasionally just for kicks. I don't really have a primary chest protector though. I've got one that I wear with normal short sleeve shirts and one that I wear with my convertible and long sleeve shirts. My short sleeve shirt chest protector is a Platinum with the sternum pad cut off as well as the extending pectoral pads cut off for better arm mobility and my long sleeve/convertible chest protector is a 97 Douglas 15 inch. I find that with a long sleeve shirt for me it looks better to have the lower profile Douglas because of the tighter fit around the arms it doesn't look as awkward as the the platinum due to the bulging effect I get with the Platinum. With the short sleeve shirt however it doesn't look as large because the sleeves don't taper down to a tighter fit. As for the convertible I just think it looks awesome having that Douglas logo showing with the zipper down. If I''m wearing a plate coat I pretty much just wing it and wear either one based on the mood I'm in that day.

  7. @mjr_2013 100% agree. nothing pisses me off more than someone questioning my age. if I'm on the field it should show that someone who knows plenty more about umpiring than you do thought i was suitable for this game. if i was asked how old i was i would respond honestly because sometimes it can be a gateway to a complement. (i.e. your as good as the older guys), but more often than not it is used in a derogatory fashion. if someone asked if i was allowed to umpire here as much as i wanna think id take the high road, id probably give them a smartass response back. id either say A) are you allowed to coach here? b ) no i just came cause i like the way navy blue looks on me or c) if i was really in a bad mood i could always go with a

  9. MLB wants their cake and they want to eat it too. The #1 cause of increased game time lengths, IMHO, is the increased length of commercials during games that has occurred over the last few decades. They just don't want to admit that publicly. Of course, that committee that was formed to look at game times (as mentioned in the article) includes zero umpires, as I recall. Par for the course with MLB.

  10. How about there is nothing wrong with the length of the games. Tickets are unbelievably expensive and I would want to get my money's worth if I were a fan. There is much more to going to a baseball game than just having a fast game.

  11. This was an error that has since been corrected in the manual update. The answer was switched with another question. The answer to K6 should read: Ruling: The pitch to Abel legalized Irwin's time at bat. The next proper batter is Abel. Since he completed his time at bat in the proper position, there is no violation. Baker would be the next proper batter, but since he is on base, Charles is the next batter due up. Sorry about the confusion. This play was supposed to reference the casebook that instructs umpires how to proceed with the next proper batter already on base. This will be in the errata and update sheet coming out in December.

  12. The only friend you have on that field is your partner(s). Never bite into conversation that concerns players or teams. For your UIC or Site Coordinator to have you apologize is BS. He should have educated you on that situation and dealt with coach himself. For you to have to go back to that coach and apologize is very unprofessional. All that does is open the door for more issues and for that coach not to respect you in future games. If I was your site coordinator, I would have told the coach that I will deal with you. If you need an apology in order to keep playing, I will apologize on your behalf. If that coach cannot accept that, I would tell him to have a nice day.

  13. This play is not subject to an "appeal". I think what you might have meant was "getting help", which, in my opinion, you have no business doing in this particular instance. The coach's argument was that the runner was "under the tag". There is no way I am going to my partner to tell me, from 70 (?) feet away, whether it was a good tag or not. If there was a possibility that the ball was dropped, I MIGHT go to my partner. Do not allow yourself to be bullied by coaches into "appealing" to your partner. It can turn into a vicious cycle once you do.

  14. I wouldn't have said a word. As a matter of fact, my back would have been turned to the coach and I would have been jogging back to Right CF. That way he would have had to chase me if he wanted to talk. But that's just me.

  15. Your third statement above is incorrect. You are correct that Irwin batted improperly for Charlie but just as Irwin taking a pitch legalizes Baker's at-bat (your second statement), Abel taking a pitch legalizes Irwin's at-bat (you are missing this piece). Abel follows Irwin in the order, so Abel is both the actual batter and the proper batter.

  16. Where is the monkey holding his hand out to be paid gif when you need it? I now tell coaches that no money=no play. All fees paid before one pitch, right in the rules (that you probably did not read). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. Correct. Not only that, you can have a situation where a batter begins to offer, realizes the pitch will hit him, and continues to turn, taking the bat over the plate. In the situation I'm envisioning, the batter abandons his initial attempt to offer at the pitch, and in that case the bat going through the zone is nothing. HBP

  20. 2-3 years ago I had a fall-ball game with 13-14 yr olds playing on 60-90. Coaches told me that most of the kids had never played on a 60-90 field before, and that few of them ever would again. One coach told me he only had one kid who had ever caught before, and planned to try out several other potential catchers. The home team's pitcher took his eight warm-ups...five bounced in front of the plate, 2 went over the catcher's head and straight to the backstop, and the one decent pitch he threw was a foot outside and the catcher just waved at it. Just as I put the ball in play, there was a flash of lightening. We shut it down and cleared the field. Several more flashes followed, then the wind started blowing and about 20 minutes later it opened up and poured. It quickly became obvious that the field would not be playable. There is a God.
