18u Wood Bat Tournament. OBR.

Two Outs. Team Ontario (Canada) hits a routine 6-3 ground out. F3 stretches toward RF to make the play. BU calls out. Very little 1BC fussing. I had no help to offer, but wasn't asked anyway. Sides change up. Ontario's HC runs out of 3B dugout and rips BU for not immediately going for help. BU had already said to AC and HC he saw it clearly and needs no help.

"P"rolonged argument ensued.

"P"ersonal insults ensued.

"P"rofanity (extreme) ensued

HC was tossed.  I escorted him off the field and he never even made his objections known to me ... I just asked which AC will be taking over, and he politely answered and left.

2 innings later, #7 from Team Ontario took a ball, then a strike, and said,

"You just called that same pitch a ball ... you KNOW you did."

I said, "Tell ya what … you don't say another word to me, and I'll let you stay in the game, deal?"

"Deal."

3 or so pitches later he was rung up. As he left the box, he turned around and said, "that's f---ing bullsh--."

I said, "You're Ejected, eh?"

His new HC needed a minute to think of a sub to go in for him, and promised to take care of #7's attitude. (Bahahaha ... he's already 18 ..... he's already out for the next game ....... he learns the attitude at least in part from his HC)

This program sent either 4 or 5 teams to this TN Tournament which was a 14-hour bus ride. If a coach gets 1 ejection, he's warned. 2, and he's done for the tourney.  Players must sit one game per ejection.

All this to ask ...

How long of a bus trip is the "max" to travel ... only to get thrown out of a game?

I find that it's easier to keep a coach in the dugout on a play like that if I confidently declare, "He held the bag!" before calling the out.  Probably wouldn't have worked on this guy though.

Not all of us put eh after a sentence. However, I always say, "all of you."

Well, I was ejecting one player ... otherwise I certainly would have said, "Y'all are ejected, eh???"

I'm no expert on the Southern dialect, but isn't "Y'all" singular and "All y'all" plural?  So if you are from the South and ejecting more than one Canadian, shouldn't the proper phrasing be, "All y'all are ejected, eh?"

"Y'all" refers to some group of people. It could be a subset of a larger group, while "all y'all" would refer to the entire group. And it never hurts for dramatic purposes to really draw out the "all." Something like "Awwwwwwll y'all." Add finger wag with a hand on your hip and a head bob for special emphasis.

I gotta share…

A million years ago, I worked a 15 yr. old tournament in MA which involved a team from Nova Scotia. If you don’t know, NS is a farm (potato) community with some of the biggest kids I’ve seen. I’ve gotta tell you, they were the most polite and easy-going group of people I’ve had the privilege of working with.

For example; the infields we were working were working were 3” of stone-dust. Although they drained like nobody’s business, in August, it was like working on the moon. Anyway, I had a NS runner stealing second. The throw got there WAY ahead of the (sliding) runner, and (like the requisite rookie), I assumed the tag in the cloud of dust and called him out. The runner got up, dusted himself off and trotted off the field…..

….and then I saw the ball in center field…..

After I fixed it, I cornered the runner, I asked; “Did you see that the ball went through?” His answer, “Yeah”. I then asked, “Why didn’t you say something”. His response, “You called me out, Mr. Ump, so I was out”…

…never saw that team again,  but, after 30 years, I still remember them….

I stand corrected …

If they played in this tournament against the boys from Ontario, you'd think it's the match of heaven vs. hell.  Had another Ontario team today. Another ejection. I'll post the situation in an appropriate subforum.

Funny. There was a Canadian team in a tourney I did a few weekends ago. I didn't have them, but from what I hear there were numerous HC/AC ejections over the first 4 games of pool play. I believe they were "asked" not to return next year.

Canadian teams do often dance to a different beat in my experience.  Most are pretty friendly to begin.  Some stay that way, others act like buffoons when things don't go their way.  In my area there's a legendary story of a longtime umpire ejecting a whole team of Canadians during a pitching change...

Go to youtube and search for Ontario Blue Jays ejection.  I've never had them, but it appears that their coaches think they are in pro ball.

Of course, that is just one Canadian baseball program.

hey, i just got to pick on you.

One guy who could, and use to, really bring it (the scoop on Canada) graduated to MiLB,  and quite smartly (even without your legal advice, counselor) quit posting upon entry into MiLB a few years ago, as you well know. Do they call you "counselor" in your area like they apparently do Dan Bellino mentioned in some articles?

No.  I'm "damn lawyer".  As in, they ask at some point after meeting me, "you're a damn lawyer?!?  I should have known!"  Accompanied by an

LOL  This might be universal.  We have at least two attorneys in our HS association, and at meetings where we are discussing rules interpretations, you can hear the collective groan when one (or both) of them begin to expound on this rule or that.  Of course it might also be that the Directors usually wait until near the end of the meetings to put rules interps on the agenda. ;)
