I don't like the look. I always though John Olerud looked a bit odd in the field with his helmet. But ever since the death of Mike Coolbaugh, base coaches have been required to wear helmets.

And guys, a lot of our time is spent around the same distance from the action.

Tom Hallion couldn't react in time to avoid this line drive...

Now I am more of a traditionalist, probably like most of you all. I would HATE the look of a helmet in the field, but it does make sense to wear a bucket for that one in a million chance. That one in a million chance could make the difference in life and death.

Am I being paranoid?

Any thoughts?

I think it is only a matter of time before players and umps at the high school level are required to wear helmets in the field. I think it's a shame, but I believe it will happen. If someone chooses to then that's fine for them, but it doesn't have to be mandated.

I think the whole helmet issue was a kneejerk reaction by MLB in response to a tragic situation. I say this because Coolbaugh was not hit hit in the head - he was hit in the neck.

agreed 100% ...since the helmet they mandated to wear today still would not have saved Mike Coolbaugh.....not sure that even the double ear batting helmet would have saved him...

This is a little bit off topic:

Here in Finland we have a national sport called Pesäpallo.

Few years ago in Finnish Championship league game one runner got hit fatally on his temple by a linedrive. After that all batters, runners and most fielders must wear an official helmet.

There are no base coaches nor are the umpires too close to the play to be in danger.
