  1. This past year, Wilson ended production of the Shock FX line of Hockey Style masks. While technically progressive, the unit represented a customer service headache for Wilson and a marketing dud when put up against the more sculpted, more rugged, and yet less expensive All-Star System7 series and Easton M series. With cages being bent by impacts, or the shocks becoming fouled up by constant frequent tossings or hurlings to the ground by catchers, more than a few were being sent back to be replaced by all-new units. At one time, Wilson did offer a replacement cage alone, but that option was quickly exhausted. Then, with a substantial portion of their production run going to replace returned units, the Shock FX wasn't generating a sufficient profit margin. Thus, last year, Wilson debuted the Pro Stock HSM, which is a great catchers HSM, as it is very sleek and looks like an even more sculpted and tapered All-Star System7. But where does that leave Shock FX users? As far as umpires were concerned, the Shock FX was a rather well-designed and accommodating HSM, offering very good viewing space and the critical stand-off distance – supplemented by the shock suspension – necessary for good forward protection. It wasn't too heavy of a unit either, all things considered, but did have some shortcomings that could have been addressed and remedied in subsequent versions. The leather pads would unfortunately retain oils and grime, and made laundering and cleaning a challenge; to their credit, Wilson did offer a replacement pad set (still may, but supplies are likely limited). Then, of course, no cage is impervious to the tremendous energy that a ball potentially carries, and the cages would get bent. Compounding this was Wilson's dalliance into titanium which, while lighter and thinner than steel, cost a substantial amount more and were "impossible" for Wilson and the average user to repair. So while Wilson was closing the line down, and supplies of replacement parts dwindled, the response back to users became, "Sorry, you'll have to purchase another one". Frustrating, to say the least. Especially when a retail Shock FX was $150 - $200 and a retail All-Star System7 was $115 - $150. Well good folks, that bent-up Shock FX can get a new lease on life. Mask-It can make repairs on the cages of the Shock FX, as the cage does remove rather easily. Two screws – one at the forehead, one at the chin – hold the cage in place, then the cage merely slides forward and free of its shock-&-spring suspension. Take note of how the parts are arranged, put them in a zip-lock bag or a jar, and then send the cage alone to Tony and his crew at Mask-It. The one they just did for @KenBAZ had a fairly large dent in the eyebrow region, and the paint was long gone to corrosion. Mask-It not only trued the mask back up, but filed the bar ends smooth (before, they were blunt and sharp) and gave it a powdercoat job in Liquid Gunmetal – one of the sexiest colors in their palette. Looks good as new, doesn't it? It came to $40, but it sure does beat trying to find and purchase a new one! Oh, I do recommend wrapping the four mounting posts in masking tape. I forgot to, and suddenly remembered an episode of American Chopper wherein powdercoat was applied to the sleeve mountings of the front fork, and they had to file and grind it off to get the fork struts in. Same thing here, I had to file the powdercoat off the four mounting posts so the springs and bushings would fit.
  2. Sun Shade Visor in Mask

As a rule I don't wear shades behind the plate. I've seen the piece that goes in the mask, the visor. What are your thoughts on that piece of equipment? Specifically - Is it worth trying out? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Brent CAUA Umpire Arkansas
  3. All-Star FM25-Custom

Hi all ..... Well ......It's time for one of my masks to go. I now have 4 and it's tough to decide, but ...my original All-Star custom job is the one I've decided on. This was done by Tony at Mask-It ... Matte black, and he took the " i-bar vision" tag off for me also. On here is an All-Star sunshield and gray/silver LMX pads. Gray vinyl on the outside, tan leather on the inside. The FM25 is a work horse! Known as a catchers mask but anyone who's used them know that first, yes, it IS a dual bar mask, but you don't notice it because of the iBar vision bars (flat), and .... VERY light for a hollow steel mask. Plus, it's durable as a M4A1 Sherman! Throat guard I'm keeping (it's in the photo, but I'm keeping it) LMX pads are used, but not very much ...still in good shape! I have over $100 in this rig .... PM me with offers please. Paypal Friends and family
  4. I'm sitting in a Texas Roadhouse after calling 9 baseball games over the past 3 days in 117°+ Arizona heat, watching the Mets get shellacked yet again by the Dodgers, when I notice the camera zoom way, way, waaaaaayyyyy in on Travis d'Arnaud and the Force3 Defender mask he's wearing. Travis is new to the Defender TM, having previously used the Mizuno Samurai HSM. The Samurai is one of the most thoroughly padded HSMs on the market, but doesn't get enough play besides the sleeker, more sculpted All-Star System 7's and Easton M-series. With the camera zoomed in on the telltale, trademark springs of the Defender, I begin reading the closed captioning of the two ESPN broadcasters discussing the details of the mask, and how it is progressively suited to reducing impact force and the likelihood of concussions. The camera pans to show all three spring points, and even shows the profile shape, with the broadcasters pointing out the standoff distance. They go on to say several catchers in the league are now using it, and there is now a hockey-style version on the market (the Defender HSM). In a move of directorial brilliance (the guy in the truck should get an Emmy nomination), the camera then pans to zoom in on Lance Barksdale as PU for tonight's game... wearing a Wilson Titanium Low Profile... with Wilson leather wraparound pads... Sigh. Facepalm. The broadcasters then contrast the Defender TM against the Wilson TiLP, and how little protection it affords the umpire. Barksdale's nose is on the verge of poking out of the eyeport, and the mask is nearly flat on his face. One of the broadcasters laments, "I never saw the point of that mask". #TimeForChange #GetWiseOffWilson #OtherOptionsExist #HeadInTheGame
  5. Reyburn's New Mask

DJ Reyburn changed his mask for a military type
  6. Diamond iX3 or Big League

Does anyone have either of these masks and if so, can you please provide feedback on them? Thanks.
  7. Hey all, Up for sale is my Nike Titanium mask. This thing is in GREAT shape. Only worn for about 1 season, and has been treated like royalty. This thing pretty much looks brand new. I'm looking to get $330 plus shipping. Send via paypal as friend. Selling frame only. I do have another thread open with some other stuff for sale... bundle some stuff together and I'm sure we can work out a price discount. PM me if your interested. Thanks!
  8. Mask/HSM chin pad prefence

The question about the Carlucci chest protector material sparked the inspiration for this thread. I will start saying that I like the leather for my pads.
  9. http://www.force3progear.com/product/pro-mask-sun-shield/ Force3 trotted out a brand-new visor for their Defender TM, and of course, it's designed to fit to the unique geometry of the Defender's upper cage. There are two tab slots instead of one, and there is a notch to accommodate the centerline mounting clip. It even has the Force3 logo (which should, and hopefully someday will, supplant the Big Yellow W) laser-engraved. ... I'm shocked I beat @gnhbua93 in this announcement. If/when I get a Defender TM, though, it will surely have one of these on it.
  10. All-Star Customer Service

To All, Another fantastic experience with customer service associated with our chosen Profession/Hobby! I ordered the All-Star MVP2510m (small head) Catcher/Umpire helmet on Sunday of this week (3/6/17). I received the helmet today (3/10/17). After examination of the helmet I discovered a gouge in the plastic. Almost as if they started to drill the hole for the screw in the wrong place, and purple paint on the silver guard. I contacted All-Star and spoke to Lisa. She had me send her the pictures of the defects. I let them know that I intended to use the mask as is on Tuesday. The spots aren't detrimental to the functionality of the mask. I just wanted to let them know, so they can be aware incase someone else has something like this. They advised me that they are sending me a new helmet and I can keep this one as a backup. Between All-Star and Force3, they have made this years experiences amazing getting ready for season and during the start of this season. http://all-starsports.com/mvp2500m.html Thanks All-Star!! Brent
  11. As I have mentioned before I'm a huge Jim Wolf admirer, and I noticed something different in yesterday's game, something that greatly disturbed me, something that caused me to look twice at the tv. He has a new mask. It seems like a Wilson but I'm not a 100% sure. I would surely appreciate it if you all could help me out. Thanks
  12. For the 2016 season, All-Star supplied one of its marquee sponsored catchers, Jonathan Lucroy, with a FM4000 mask. In the past, Lucroy had utilized the latest titanium models All-Star offered, typically the venerable FM25. This particular FM4000 looked a bit strange, though, appearing to have tin-foil clad ear struts and some of the cleanest welds I'd ever seen. That last photo, from the side, those bars look kinda... bloated... for being hollow steel. Turns out, it might not be a hollow-steel FM4000 after all... Lucroy was equipped with the ultra-brand-new Magnesium FM4000MAG: http://www.baseballmonkey.com/all-star-fm4000mag-magnesium-catchers-mask.html All-Star hasn't even listed it on their site yet; but then again, they didn't publish the 2015 FM25Ti either, leaving it to forum and discussion sites to show details about it.
  13. New Mask Choices

Gentlemen, I've been lurking here for months, reading posts and admiring the knowledge of, camaraderie in, and passion for this avocation of ours. I finally have a post of my own to make. I have been working my way up in the college ranks, and it looks like I will be getting some D-I work this coming spring. As a result, I've been thinking about upgrading my equipment, specifically my mask and CP. Even the D-II and -III stuff I am have been working probably warrants an upgrade. The mask is first, as the one I have been using is a few years old, and not as heavy-duty as I think is warranted at the D-I level. The CP is good, but I will likely upgrade to a West Vest next year. So, I have narrowed the masks down to these, and would like input from the group on what would be the best choice. Diamond Pewter Grey iX3 Aluminum Umpire Mask with Quik-Dry Diamond Silver Big League Aluminum Umpire Mask with Leather Wilson Silver Dyna-Lite Aluminum Umpire Mask with Memory Foam I came to these choices because I don't want a hockey-style mask, and I don't want to drop 2 bills on a Wilson titanium. I get the feeling the Wilson is the best, but was wondering if the Diamond ix3 and Diamond Big League are equivalent (or close) for $30-$50 less. There is also this: Wilson Silver Dyna-Lite Aluminum Umpire Mask with Black and Grey which seems to be the same mask, with different pads, but this is another $30 above the memory foam padded Wilson. LOL -- And as I type that last sentence, I can hear "Why take a chance with your head and face for $30-$50?" So maybe I have my answer. But if anyone can speak to these masks, I'd love the feedback. Cheers, all!
  14. Hello all - A fellow teacher is wanting to umpire for the first time this year. Since everyone in this community is amazing, I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone has some extra equipment lying around to help get him started. I've got him hooked up with base shoes, shin guards, and ball bags that I wasn't using anymore. Here's a list of other things we're looking for (preferably at a cheap price and in good condition): Mask (just a basic Dyna-Lite if available) Chest protector (XL or 13 inch) Plate shoes (Size 13 2E would be ideal, but 13 D will work, too) Thanks! Cody
  15. Up for sale 2 brand new sets of navy blue Nike mask pads. $60 shipped each PayPal Friends and Family is the only method of payment accepted.
  16. I would like to try out a Magnesium Alloy mask. Two extremely similar models were put to market just a couple years ago (they were likely clones or copies of each other) from +POS and Champro. My preference would be the +POS, but I would not decline a Champro. Once you contact me that you have one, we can discuss purchasing, lend-lease, or trade options. It's only crucial the frame is intact – if the pads are shot or the harness is kaput (or missing), no worries.
  17. Hey guys, I ordered a Force3 Defender mask from UA about a month ago and I am enjoying it thoroughly! I have started to look into ordering replacement pads and a Wilson harness for the mask, but I realized I do not know what version of the mask (V1 or V2) that UA sent to me. I noticed on the Force3 website that replacement pads are only sold for the V1 as far as I can tell, but I do not know which version I have. Is there any way to distinguish between the two different versions of the mask? Looking at pictures, the masks seem almost identical.
  18. Hi all ... Looking for an All-Star harness.... either new, or slightly used .......thanks .......
  19. Hey guys, I'm looking to get a traditional style mask. Specifically, a Nike Steel frame or silver Wilson frame (I dig the silver frame on black pads look). I don't really need the pads, but would take them or a harness if need be. Obviously, the price will matter too. Thanks
  20. Hey everyone, ... quick question: I know that Joe West went through different iterations of the West Vest w/ the first being produced by Douglas (proud owner ) but ..I digress ....... My question is this ........ Q: Did Joe West ever make masks earlier than going with Wilson and the Dyna-Lite and using the WV logo on the pads and harness? The reason: Guy on Craigslist thinks he has a West Vest mask, not an inferior Wilson Dyna LIte model (huh??) Thanks!!!!!!!
  21. I'm trying to decide if I should buy a black mask on eBay (due to its low price), but I don't really like the color. What do you guys/gals suggest I do in order to remove the original coating?
  22. I got excellent news from Tony at MaskIt that he can indeed repair my busted Nike Steel mask and put it back good as new'ish. So, I don't need this second one I hastily bought from a fellow U-E member just in case my primary gamer was truly dead and irreparable. It's a low-profile Nike Steel, with a MaskIt Powder Coat (MIPC) of bright silver. The Nike harness is included. The TW pads are not included, neither is the Markwart sun visor. Lightweight, resilient and iconic. PM with reasonable offers. I have a number in mind – it is not outrageous and I'm willing to be flexible.
  23. Wilson WTA3009 BLTI for sale

Hey all, looking to sell mask mentioned above. It is in fantastic shape, just some sweat marks in all the right places. Mask itself is spotless. I bought it now knowing what it was and I need a catcher's mask. Asking $150.00 for mask with shipping included of course. I have a new Apple computer and the pictures are taking forever to upload. Email me and I will send pictures if you'd like. .ask1 .ask2
  24. Jim Wolf's Mask

I was wondering if you guys and girls out there could help me out in figuring out Wolf's mask. I know it's a Nike ti but in the picture the frame looks a little wide at the edges. He's my favorite umpire and he wears one of the greatest masks around.
