  1. Hi, all! New member of the umpiring family here! I’m working on building my equipment bag and I’m trying to decide on a mask. I’m split between the Wilson Dynalite aluminum and All-Star S7 mask (not the HSM). I’m leaning towards the Wilson because thats what the MLB guys wear, but I have to admit the S7 is pretty sexy. Any recommendations/opinions are greatly appreciated! - Luca
  2. Guys. To those who have send masks to Tony for repairs. He suffered a medical emergency on January 3rd. Here is the link for a fundraiser for him. https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/e37v7l/donate

I probably should put this in the equipment forum..
  4. Five mask pads for sale. Price is SHIPPED in the lower 48. 1. Grey mag pads, almost brand new, no fraying or discoloration, 9/10. $45 Sold 2. Another grey mag pads, well used. Some fraying on the straps and feel more broken in. Used by me about 5 times but probably around 2 or 3 years old, 5/10. $30 3. All star FM25 LUC black pads, almost brand new, 9/10. $25 4. Adidas Icon blue pads, have never been on a field, 10/10. $15 5. All Star FM25 vinyl pads, came with my FM25, probably used by a catcher before but still pretty clean, 7/10. $15 If you want more than one, we can make a bundle deal. Also open to trades.
  5. I’m really looking to trade. I’m really looking for a mizuno 122 frame or anything +pos (no shoes or pants) PM me thanks, Sam
  6. Was watching the game last night and was wondering if anybody knows who the manufacturer is for the mask the plate umpire was wearing last night? And the throat guard as well? And wasn't it great to watch live baseball again?
  7. I've seen a lot of umpires take their mask off with their right hand; both partners I've worked with and even high level umpires online. I thought you weren't supposed to use your right and I personally only use my left hand and would never go right. But it okay to use your right hand? If you're an evaluator/assigner, would you ding someone for using their right?
  8. Brand New Adidas Icon Mask with burgandy pads. Asking $50 shipped or best offer (buyer pays shipping then). PayPal accepted. PM for inquiries.
  9. About a year and a half ago a person from my other job said he hadn't umpired in forever, and gave me his old gear. Included was this mask frame (no pads or harness) and I can't figure out what make/model it is. It looks a lot like an All-star or Rawlings, but I haven't found any exact matches. Any ideas?
  10. Does anyone have any Wilson mask harnesses they don't want? I know they aren't that popular but I like them and need some for back-up masks.
  11. I have a brand new Adidas Icon for sale that I bought on impulse and I just don't need it. I bought it new a month ago and have never worn it in a game. Pics available upon request. I already trashed the pads but I have the original harness if you happen to want it. I also have an extra one of Ray's elastic (not neoprene) harnesses I can throw in if you want. $80. Free shipping. PayPal F&F.
  12. I've seen some discussion of the Estabrook type combo on the forum and want to test out some thinking on it. My motivation, of course, is to find as good protection as possible realizing that concussions will always be a risk. It appears from the forums that he is using a Rawlings Coolflo Matte Style Alpha Sized Base Coach Helmet (https://www.amazon.com/Rawlings-Coolflo-Matte-Style-Helmet/dp/B010R05ONA). I am seeking opinions on combining this with one of the Unequal inserts -- either the Solo (https://unequal.com/solo/) or Uncap HDR (https://unequal.com/uncap-hdr/) to add to the protection. Based on what I've read in the forums, I am also considering modifying my current mask to add a DeltaFlex facemask harness (https://www.all-starsports.com/fmhpro.html) to make it easier to one-hand my mask onto the helmet. Has anyone done this or something similar? I am concerned less with how this looks as how it will work. One forum mentioned that the bill of this helmet might push the mask out too far. Comments (and please no "if you are afraid to get hit maybe you should find something else to do with your time")

  14. Hi guys, I was looking at masks and was wondering ,for people that have them, do wrap around pads on a mask help with shots to the mask? Thanks in advance

  16. Maybe I’m a little bit crazy, but aren’t we all a little bit “crazy” when we decide to umpire? I have a Nike (used for about 3 games) with black TW pads, with black tape), MLB harness. I’m looking to trade it for a Power “L.” Maybe I’m dreaming, but I’ll give it a shot. Link to pictures below: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dBrKQc9LuFsAP3hi9
  17. I'm thinking of getting one but pricing and opinions are hugely variable. I'm more than happy with my current F3v2 mask as my daily driver, so to speak, but I'm still concerned about broken bats and other flying objects that could hit me in the side of the head, so I've been contemplating biting the bullet and grabbing a HSM to use in higher-level wood bat leagues. So far the ones in contention are (in order of preference) the F3v2 Defender HSM, the All-Star MVP4000, and the Wilson MLB Pro Stock. From my perspective, the F3v2 still has the upper hand because of the springs and the extra bit of steel that extends over the forehead area, à la Gary Cederstrom's custom Wilson cage, not to mention it's over $100 cheaper than the All-Star. I'm not terribly concerned about more weight from the HSM as I didn't find the extra weight much of an issue when I switched from my +POS Zero-G to the F3v2 so I suspect I'll be fine going to the heavier HSM-style anyway. Anyone have experience with any of these masks? Things I should know that I might have missed or might not have thought about?
  18. Alright, my friends! I was wondering: where could I find the smalle bottom pad for the FM4000MAG? Thanks!
  19. If you were to build a metal throat guard, what color of strap would you use on a silver color metal throat guard? Black or gray? And the same question for a black one. I would use black for both, what is your choice?
  20. Hey guys, I’ve got a Nike titanium mask looking to sell. In good condition, only looking to sell. Blue pads and nike harness The mask’s frame is in its original color. Looking for around $300 to 350, but willing to negotiate. I've got the item listed on ebay, only because I cannot navigate this sight very well. PM for more info! Sold!
  21. Does anyone have an older design version of the standard profile Wilson Ti (see picture below) that they're willing to part with? Thanks!

    Face Value

In viewing clips of pitches and hits on mlb.tv, I have noticed a trend – MLB umpires are opting to a wider variety of masks rather than the default, formerly supplied Wilson DynaLite. We’re still seeing guys use the Wilson DynAlum and the occasional Wilson Titanium (Way Too) Low Profile, and there are those still relying on their Nike Icon Titaniums, but we’re also seeing increased numbers of Mizunos, Force3 Defenders, and All-Star FM4000MAGs. I’m sincerely wondering when that “paradigm shift” or “break point” is going to occur, when it is open season on branding gear with attributed logos instead of hiding, obscuring, or flat-out lying so as to appease a company that lethargically refuses to progressively protect their “sponsored” representatives. Because a knocked-off mask is viewed as a “failed mask”, MLB umpires – wearing Wilson -marked masks especially – are directed to wear their masks far too tight. Well, coincidentally, this plays right into Force3’s strengths, as the reactive spring suspension functions best when the mask is worn snugly. It’s just a shame that Force3 doesn’t receive due credit!
  23. Amidst all the hubbub surrounding the debut of the Champro CM83/84 Rampage die-cast Magnesium mask, there’s another mask that appeared in Champro’s catalog that is just as intriguing and likely at a great price point. https://shop.champrosports.com/p-3852-proplus-aluminum-lightweight-umpire-mask-drigear.aspx This mask, my friends, is aluminum. It is the CM81/82, based on Champro’s CM71/72 Ultralight hollow steel mask, but this time done in aluminum, so it doesn’t bend! I know from experience of using it and supplying to my junior umpires, it has excellent sightlines, a squared chin guard with forward rake, and a broad extended crown guard. Now in aluminum, Champro really did think of everything! Here’s the big value, though... Wilson’s DynaLite Aluminum starts at $110. The famous Diamond DFM-iX3 is at $70, but could really use the thicker, better pads of the BL (Big League) version at $90. Well fellows, this here Champro is $70. I love the idea of taking that extra $40 I just saved and getting... well, just about anything else of quality to complete my umpire gear needs.
  24. Anyone interested in this mask? Nike Steel "Teardrop" Powder coated grey with silver flake Team Wendy Pads Diamond Sun Visor Wilson Harness Make an offer!
  25. Just arrived this afternoon: Yup, that’s a Diamond DFM-iX3-Pro. For catchers. In aluminum. It weighs nothing. I gotta say, the pads on this thing, as simple as they are, are better than the default pads on the Umpire version (not the DFM-UMP-BL)! In any case, it’s strong, light, and offers a rather generous eyeport. It won’t bend. The only reason this didn’t really gain traction with catchers is because it’s not an All-Star or UnderArmour, or Nike, or Easton (who all use titanium or steel), and the NFHS codes prohibit them. Without them carried on retail shelves, they’re only order-able online, where they get undercut by insanely cheap steel masks (Rawlings, Wilsons and MacGregors) or overlooked in favor of the name-brand starlets (Easton, UnderArmour, All-Star). I ordered this mask in for one of my fellow umpires who is using an old TAG -brand steel, bent like a coat hanger would be to be used as a TV antenna. I have a black harness for it, and we’ll be teaming this up with +POS tan leather pads... which should be arriving any day now. Oh yeah, the price? Ordered direct from Diamond, $30.
