  1. Jim Evans called it "proper use of the eyes". It is really a timing tool so you don't rush your calls. "see it, hear it, call it"
  2. Tthere are runners on, BU is in B or C. 1BC moves out of the coach's box to align himself with the pitcher to get a better look at a move to first. My umpire friend will call time and move the coach back to at least one foot in the box. I don't see a problem with the coach's position. I told him I would ask the experts on U-E. My default is NFHS, but would be interested in hearing ant and all levels and opinions.
  3. This has always been the case. Even when there was an abundance of bodies.
  4. Rule book and case book are $7.50 each.get a combo hat to begin with. You don't need the duffle bag right out of the box. Most of the items you purchased will last multiple years, so don't compare one year earnings to long term expenditures. As you go along, you will upgrade or add additional items. I budget about $300/year to upgrade/add to my equipment. I make between $3k and $4K for about 50 games. I could easily make $10k - $15k, if I wanted to work that much. It all depends on where you are and who you know. If you're in this for the money, you're in it for the wrong reason or you need to get to pro school in January.
  5. It takes a good deal of self-control and you (generic) need to let things roll off. If you're (generic again) the type that gets angry at other people's words or actions off the field, why would you not react the same when on the field. IMHO
  6. HS association - assigned plate/base, but can switch if partner agrees. I will call the school to confirm on game day. I then call my partner and confirm TOA, parking place and position. Since I called him, I have his number and he has mine.
  7. D&D...deaf & dumb. I have worked just under 1800 games in 4 sports and have only talked to the fence a handful of times (always a mistake). I can only remember feeling threatened 2 or 3 times and 2 of those we went straight to authorities (police) that were present (varsity football). I no longer hear beyond the fence.
  8. My chiropractor put an infrared light on the bruise and recommended massaging up towards the pit. It's mostly gone 2 weeks later. The coloring will also flow downwards, think gravity.
  9. "Proper use of the eyes" - Jim Evans
  10. Fortunately, the state changed the shirt and pants so that got rid of most of these.🙄
  11. Not down the shore. Too many guys still want to stick their nose in this.🥴
  12. After reading the dreaded sportsmanship statement, I will tell the team “and don’t let me see any jewelry!” They usually get the message and I don’t see it.
  13. I have called this. I had his foot moving forward.
  14. this year, we need to read it to each team after they finish I/O. I guess the captains weren't bringing the message back to the dugout.

Kyles's answer is straight NFHS speed-up rules. Speed-up rules are available for state association adoption. Tournaments that use NFHS modify as needed
  16. As I said, the Stone Age, early 70s, so we're good there. I have a little trouble calling verbal obstruction on this scenario now. I don't think the situations presented are on point. Are we saying the team calling 2-out when there is actually 1-out is verbal obstruction?
  17. When I played, back in the Stone Age, we had a play on defense that if there was R3 and 1 out, if the batter strikes out, I (F2) would roll the ball between the mound and the baseline of our dugout. Everyone would start to leave as if there were 3 outs. If R3 was alert he would head home. F1 would pick up the ball and throw it to me for the tag. In 3 varsity years, I think it worked 4 out of 6 times. moving forward...I'm working the bases in a JV game. There's one out, R3, def coach yells a key word and says there's 2 outs (there's only 1). Because of my experience, I know what is coming. My partner calls time and announces there is only one out. Def coach was very upset with my partner. It's a designed play for the defense. Sounds like the defense screwed the pooch...run scored.
  18. I'm not sure I have interference. I don't think the movement was enough. In real time, it could go for BI or not. No CI in any way, shape, or form.

    Where in AZ

@Senor Azul The team pictured played in the finals...and lost. I was curious if anybody here worked the tournament. I do believe it was girls baseball. My brother's niece was on her LL all star team which had some success in the post season tournaments. This is a travel team that plays in many tourneys.
  20. I had weekly stitch marks on my neck from my catching days in the 70's, pre-Yeager.. As an umpire, it happens less often and I do use a TG.
  21. Back in '04 I had a quadruple bypass. I was using a soft CP. The next year I was working an adult game when I was hit by a foul ball right in the middle of my chest. It didn't hurt, but scared the crap out of me. The next day, I went online and bought my first hard shell CP.
  22. Anybody working this tourney in AZ. My brother's grandniece is one of the players. Team is from NJ area.
  23. The universality & accuracy of this is remarkable.
