@barry haggard IMO the best thing you can for any CP is put a good harness on it. Most stock harnesses are sub par but getting better. I just sold my Champion and Douglas CP's due to not being able dur to health. But I wore the Champion all during summer league HS age kids, 15-17 without any worries. The Umplife harness is great it has enough strap length to fit a 15" or longer cp. If you have a good harness that keeps your cp up high you should be well protected.

@umpstu, MAn I hate to hear that. I wish you the best on the weight loss, that and exercise is key. I am at 190 now and I want to break 180. If you still remember your PT exercises continue to do those as well, it really helps me out along with an occasional ice bag and some prescription strength Tylonol. I stay away from the addictive stuff, I don't want it.

Thanks. Its huge to have a league president that has a zero tolerance mindset. In a preseason meeting he laid out expectations, the process to voice your complaints, and punishment if you get out of line. When the umpire mistakes are made, I can teach and correct the error one on one with limited hostility on the field. So far the last few years have been good and in a time that its hard to find umpires, we had a 90% return rate for the second year.

Outside heel edge are the only areas showing to be worn, the rest have life left. I do and have always taken good care of my equipment. At least weekly cleanings of equipment or more. Equipment bag never left my vehicle. Only touched the ground from the house to my truck in the driveway.

Thank you for the well wishes. In 2007 I had a complete rupture of C5 and C6. My neurologist repaired both with a fabric stay in place cast if you will, and the voids grew back 100%. Several years later arthritis attacked and had to have a second surgery to clean it all out. 3 years ago due to high pain, I umped just a few games a year while taking over as umpire trainer, manager, and league assistant. basicly I train and control our umps and the league president and i observe all games and keep knuckleheaded coaches under control and off our umps. Any complaints are addressed with us not the umps. Now arthritis has caused major disc degeneration from C2 all the way to C7. I am having another surgery around thanksgiving to fuse C4,C5,C6 together with steel plates. There is a very real possibility that come next spring that he will have to go in and place a steel rod in the back of my neck from C2 thru C7. I am not currently ok with this. I have asked my doctor to find a way to allow me to still go play golf and not to have severely limited movement. Just sold my motorcycle as well, the riding days are over as well.

I love the 4" throat protector. Like you I have the 6", but the 4" works a lot better.

It was confirmed that the bat in question did go thru the inspection on Thursday, confirmed by another SEC umpire that is a good friend of mine. He spoke with one of the umps on the field after the game.

To me it was a horrible decision by the plate umpire. UT played a wednesday game instead of Tuesday, and loaded the bus early Thursday morning for the 4hr drive to Nashville. What wasn't said in the story was per NCAA rules, all the bats for both teams were inspected Thursday with both team reps present. The bat in question passed, if it had been found to not pass it would have been conviscated and held til the end of the series. The bat had the appropriate NCAA approval sticker by the bat manufacturer, an approval sticker from the game the night before. Since the bat met with NCAA approval it was on the offical NCAA approval bat approval list. So the only thing in question was the fact that a silly little sticker came off of the bat. So my question is the plate umpire knowing the process and knowing that it wasn't conviscated on thursday, how do you take away a home run over a sticker that probably wasn't stuck on very well and hold it in the highest proof of legality when you had all the other information there??

For me the best all around in all weather plus good protection has been the all star LUC pads and the Honings pads.

Another vote for the diamond 33". Five years and no sign of wear.

@BCBrad and @MadMax, I have been considering replacing my 15" Champion with the XV as the backup to my Douglas. With your gushing reviews you have just about convinced me to pull the trigger on one.

@ofhs93 The FM4000 is very tough and deflects foul balls very well and has great vision. @Thunderheads has one for sale at a sweet price.

@Rock Bottom Nutty Buddy was a good choice. Its the most comfortable cup I've ever worn, and the most protective. Hint for wearing it, compression shorts with the NB and NB strap over the top of the compression shorts.

Double check the walmart listing, its the regular catchers version harness not the umpire harness.
