  1. I personally wouldn't wear memory foam pads, thats the material in my pillow so it would just make me sleepy ^^^^That's some funny $h*t right there. ^^^^
  2. Always keep an eye on the ball. ^^ This to prevent..... ^^ this. @Kevin_K, Yes, I've learned that lesson....I believe you might have witnessed me learning that lesson....and thanks by the way for bailing me out.
  3. Always keep an eye on the ball. Exactly what I did. I turned with the ball. By then the INT had occurred and 2 was past F6
  4. Stuff happens. I raised my arms and called "foul" on a foul tip tonight with an R3 and one strike. No harm, as R3 wasn't coming home anyway, but DHC says "Isn't he out? My catcher caught it." I just said "strike 2 coach", and we went on. Not my proudest moment
  5. R2, I'm in "C". GB to F6 to my right. I take a step in with the right foot and turn with the ball. By the time I turn, I see R2 past F6 and F6 standing there with his arms out as the ball rolls past him. F7 fields it and we've got R1, R3. I hear a lot of yelling from the stands. I look at my partner and he's just standing there. Now DHC starts towards me. Very politely and completely under control he comes to me and says, "I know you had you're back to it, but that was interference. Can you check with your partner?". I tell him sure. I go to my partner and ask him what he saw out there, as I was pivoting with the ball and didn't see it. He tells me R2 ran right into F6. I tell him "Fine, I'm calling interference and R2 is out" He just nods. I make the call, and everybody's fine with it since I was probably the only person who didn't see it. My question is, should I have seen it? With an R2 and a GB to F6, should I turn to look at R2/F6 berfor the ball passes me? I know my partner should have called it right away and I told him that in our post game, but should I have seen it?
  6. Why? Because there's plenty of DHCs that are going to come out ranting and raving "You called him out and my guy stopped running. You can't change a call like that, yada yada"..Not saying all of 'em, but there's plenty out there that will. Uh, @Richvee, the DHC isn't going to come out and say that. In fact, in your scenario, there won't be a coach coming out, more than likely. Think about it – The Offensive Team Head Coach (OTHC, OHC) has something to potentially gripe about, but your on-the-fly changing of the call from out to safe actually benefited his team, albeit momentarily. The Defensive Team Head Coach (DTHC, DHC) has nothing to gripe about, because while you changed your own call from out to safe, his team had the awareness to get the third out after all, so where's the problem? This is why, good readers, you read and process and breathe and then make the call. Take your time. No reason to bark out a call the instant a play happens. The gripe would come from the OHC if his other runners stopped running after hearing the original out call and were subsequently called out at 1st or 3rd for the 3rd out. His gripe is his players heard the 3rd out and stopped running. That's why they were able to be thrown out. If you "fix" the situation as some have suggested and put runners on 1st and 3rd, I think you'll hear from the DHC, arguing his team heard the right call was safe and kept playing and the offense should have as well and there is nothing to "fix". The inning should be over. Bottom line, poor timing causes $h*tstorms, and on this play, you're gonna get one more often than not.
  7. Great recommendations for F9 toward the line and trouble balls. For some reason all I was thinking of were groundballs through the hole and obvious line drive "singles" where you're pivoting.
  8. I get them often in 14u games. I find it pretty easy to come in and pivot and pick up the ball. To me it's obvious when there's going to be a play at 1st by just watching the play develop. Coming in and pivoting puts you in a pretty good position to see the play at 1st. Close to a 90 degree angle from the throw to the bag to me. Twice from "c" today, again easy to move across the working area towards 1st to get the good angle. Had three 9-3 putouts today. Twice was with 2 outs and go ahead run on 3rd in a tie game in the 6th and again in the 7th inning. One earlier with the bases empty. F9 playing shallow for that play all day. Then, bottom 8, 2 out R2, line drive to right. This time 10 feet over F9's head for the game winning hit. "Real" outfield depth and it's the 3rd out. I know we aren't supposed to "root" for teams, but I had a smile on the inside when I saw that liner sail over F9's head.
  9. Why? Because there's plenty of DHCs that are going to come out ranting and raving "You called him out and my guy stopped running. You can't change a call like that, yada yada"..Not saying all of 'em, but there's plenty out there that will. i dont think rich I was questioning the SH*# sandwich.. Ah...I see. He's out there adding the cheese and lettuce to the sandwich.

  11. OK. So let's say R1, not stealing, B2 swings and hits F2 on the follow through, knocks the ball loose, but R1 never moves. Do we call BI? If we say this is not BI, then essentially, we're calling the batter out because R1 saw the ball roll away and decided to run. Doesn't seem right. To me, it makes sense that if there are runners on, and the batter hits F2 with the follow through, if the runners weren't running on the pitch and take off AFTER the contact and subsequent lose of the ball by F2, that killing the play and sending the runners back would be the right thing. The ruling in 7.3.5 F says The ball is dead immediately. B3 is out for interference and R1 returns to third base. In this play I believe B3 is out for INT because he cannot advance to 1st after hitting the ball away from F2 on the follow through. So he's out for strike three and the ball is dead so he can't adavance. R1 saw this, took off for home and was sent back to 3rd. Had this been strike one or two, I don't think B3 is out. I think the ball is dead and R1 returns because R1 didn't start to advance until after the follow through INT. The ball is dead at that point.
  12. Did they have to draw a line from 1st to 3rd and call it a foul line? Nope..They sure didn't.
  13. Leave it to FED to confuse things by using the same phrase as OBR to refer to something completely different. FED Follow through INT = OBR backswing INT. However the penalties are different. FED get the out, OBR sends the runner back only. FED backswing INT now means the batter hits the catcher as he's bringing the bat up to take his stance prior to the pitch. This is just "time" and reset.... Did FED really need to clarify this and give it name? Let alone a name that refers to something completely different in all other baseball books?
  14. The fans were riding him all night...6 hours worth. This is the game Cabrerra and Williams got tossed. Class all around. The fans, the Giants dugout, even the announcers seemed to find humor in Vic getting plunked in the head. upon further review, Smoltz and Vasgersion were not amused with the fans reaction.
  15. I'm pretty sure F2 retrieved it, and had no one to throw to at home to try on the 2nd runner. I assume he never threw to anyone. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v36813647/
  16. From what I saw watching the game, they didn't make a big deal out of it, so they didn't show many replays or any angles that showed who, if anyone called time before or after Hosmer took off for 3rd. Seemed to be a non issue to KC, and the TV crew. However when I was watching, I thought, like you, "Who called time? When?"
  17. This just seems so odd to me. I sounds like you're trying to deek the runner into thinking he is allowed to score. When in reality, if he "takes you up on the offer" and continues around the bases, he's out on proper appeal of 1st base when play is resumed. Then if he does go back and touch 1st after you tell him he's awarded home, you look at him and say "Haha..only kidding, you get 3rd". The other odd thing about this play is the last sentence "Runner is between second and third when the ball goes out of play.". Does the where the runner is when the ball goes out of play have any bearing on this play? Is it not 2 bases from the time of the throw? Or is this play saying if R1 was between 1st and 2nd when the ball went out of play we would award 3rd right from the start and not home, even though he was between 2nd and 3rd time of throw?
  18. Funny some of the differences in this great country of ours. A "scalper" at Yankee Stadium selling seats for $200 for a potential league championship clinching game would be considered a steal.
  19. Plenty seats on stub hub starting around $200. That would get you in the parking lot at a NY playoff game.
  20. That's a good point. Had something like this happened in a FED game, I could see PU standing there pointing fair while the BR comes back to the box and the fielder pick up the ball and toss it back to F1..everyone assuming it's foul. Wonder how long a PU could stand there pointing fair before anyone notices.

    Joe West

Anyone watching the game? Joe's miked. He takes a shot. F2 turns around and Joe says "I'm all right, throw him the ball." He gives a little chest flex/tough guy shrug with the arms away from his side, and then says ...."Sort of.." and laughs......Great stuff.
  22. I don't think this play is that simple. You have F1 charging to 1st, F4 cutting across to 1st, F3 moving into the same area you would usually be moving to to pivot. Add the sun factor that seems to imply nobody was 100% sure where the ball was, I think Kevin did the right thing staying out. Similar to when we need to go foul for a call at 1st in a pressure situation. Very nice that he had a partner aware enough to pick up on the fact that he was on the outside and started towards 3rd being he was behind the play at 2nd.
  23. Emphasize to them you can't possibly teach them all the rules in one day, and they need to read the rule book. Emphasize this more than a couple times during the course of your one day clinic. Make yourself available to them via e-mail, phone to answer questions they will have when reading the rule book.
  24. My son was pitching in a game this spring. R1 R2. One out. Fly ball over the first baseman's head. PU calls IFF. Ball falls to the ground untouched in shallow left field. DHC tells the first baseman to step on first and appeal that R1 left early. I bury my head in my hands and bite my tongue. BU grants the appeal for the third out. Stuff like this, watching my son play years ago was what made me get into this. I saw so many basic rule misapplications....IFF and base awards being the most butchered. Unfortunately, it was before I umpired and I wasn't a quiet parent when rules were applied incorrectly. Yeah, I was one of them.... Not proud, but it is what it is.
  25. What is LL rule for D3K? when is the batterrunner out for not running. Dirt circle, like OBR or Dugout, like FED?
