  1. Where is Rich?????? In LL terminology, what does, must not be present at the "game site" mean. For me it would be any area-(including the parking lot) that the LL owned but that is why I am asking Rich who knows LL rules, philosophies and exactly what every word means. I would assume (or maybe not) each League may allow a certain area to go to on the owned property as talked and agreed upon at the League meeting. Maybe DTM could have more specifics included in his presentation to the board as the UIC of this League for next year. Just try and make it a more black and white issue for everyone involved during the game. Once the game is over, if he is allowed back for his BOD duties as per LL rule, then of course he should be allowed. How are the words to this to be interpreted Rich and how do you handle it at your complex.
  2. First, I want all players to subscribe to every single recommendation also, "all the time" before we have umpires subscribe. Why suddenly start offering more money because ex players should get involved. Why not more money for non players that are there now. Got to give ex players more money eh. I wondered what would drive a higher paycheck. You could add more money to any profession and make it more attractive and increase the pool of applicants. If we bump a guy out after making 3 or 4 bad calls, heck, everyone will get the opportunity to be a MLBU. I'll just wait till that last group of people, which will include me, on earth get the call, it will not be long. Oh heck, just do like Japan and grab the public address mike and just apologize all day long for everything. Nice 24 hour games. I'm so sorry, I apologize for being born, etc. etc.!!!! Cripes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do we need so many openings. Since we all know that each one of us is the best umpire on the planet (and we all should think that way or we are not worth our salt), then there only need be 1 opening. In the old days when one could skip, only need to wait 4-6 years, now it can be done after waiting 8 years. How many doctors are making 125K in their 9th year of schooling at 27 years old like a MLBU could with the current system in place? Not every player umpire is going to get to stay long so where is the incentive if you cannot have a 20 year career, unless they pay the 500k a rookie bench warmer can make just in case they fire you after only a couple years and you have been in the minors as a player for a lot of years.
  3. Oh boy, here it is. Keep it professional, not personal. Let's not get locked up from the moderators. 4. This is a great lesson. I will tell you that it is more of an art than a science. Where less-experienced umpires make the mistake is that they invent rules to create common sense, fair play, and advantage/disadvantage where if they would've simply enforced the rule "as written" common sense, fair play, ad/dis would've played out. But that's what happens when they don't know the rule. (I'm not saying in the case of the OP)...but it takes a lot of experience to "umpire with the rule book" something that I'm still practicing. Many things lend credence to the old saying "experience is the best teacher"
  5. Well MAU Everyone can watch this same umpire work the Michigan/Nebraska game on Sunday as the PU. Play kinda of reminds me of that old hoops philosophy that I read about somewhere. Advantage/disadvantage. A little contact is bound to occur when a bunch of players are moving around within 18 feet of the basket. It is up to the official to decide if small amounts of contact put the opponent at a disadvantage in which case the whistle is blown. If the contact did not put the player at a disadvantage, then the whistle is withheld. Otherwise, to call the game exactly and as literally as the rules are written, would make for a not so pleasant experience. Might as well just have each team line up at the free throw line and all the players shoot 10 free throws and the team that hits the most wins, and we all go home. Appreciate your insights into "possibilities" of handling certain situations as they occur without demanding that they "must" be handled in that manner. We need your insights into certain situations as they occur and into handling those situations as they occur so we can ponder how we would handle that situation if it did indeed occur in a game we were working.
  6. Good point. Does anybody know with any certainty if a call was made? Here is the play by play for the 8th inning. Green doubled to right center, and advanced to third on a fielding error by cf (2-1 BKB). Rea line out to ss (1-0 B). Stover struck out swinging (3-2 BBKKBS). Evans J., to p. for Garza, Jr. Green stole home, unearned. Saxon flied out to cf (1-2 KKBF). 1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 0 LOB. There was no passed ball nor WP under the team fielding stats nor under the pitching stats. Just a ball to the backstop and a run scored.
  7. Could this happen to regular Airline worker's on the ground outside, who are around aircraft all day for 30-40 years or just military. Who would have the best hearing protection (airlines or military) and does it do any good???
  8. "I don't know" Isn't he on third base???

  10. Well, one worked the 99,03,06 CWS one worked the 07,09,12 CWS one worked the 11 CWS Seems pretty good to me. At :03 that move is why nobody can play little ball anymore, since it has been deemed legal. Is the catcher allowed to jump that far out in front of home plate???? When does this constitute a balk or catchers interference (does the bat have to hit the glove for CI on a pitch to draw the CI on this play---wasn't there a time where the catcher could not do this???). If CI and everyone does not advance, what does it become. Is there an option on this play???
  11. He should be OK. Worked 3B tonight.
  12. explanation from the crew http://blog.thenewstribune.com/mariners/2013/05/14/umpires-explanation-for-the-obstruction-call/
  13. Don't leave me hanging here. How is this taught at the school? Isn't the plate umpire immediately supposed to start signalling time and obstruction when it occurs, without worrying about whether or not the base umpire is starting or getting ready to start his out or safe call? Would the school use a play like the pitcher coming over to field the ball at the line on a bunt and the ball is already past him and his momentum causes him to collide with the base runner running to first in the base line. At least that is a hypothetical that I can come up with, but that obstruction happens much further from the bag (more towards home plate) than this one did.
  14. I only got a "Really?" from the first base coach--you are living with the angels UIC Well, it is good to hear that other professional umpires in other leagues and speeds of play miss one every now and then. I miss them too even in the wiffle ball league It is ok to anticipate the play that is developing, you should just try not to anticipate the call itself. Of course you know that, but things happen, and this is more for the new guys here. I believe MLB would still allow the umpire, if he felt forced, to go into foul territory on this type of call rather than the 2 steps fair positioning. There is no guarantee that this umpire would have made the correct call in that position either. Can I get an affirmative or negative from the guys in the know that this play could be called from either fair territory or foul territory or is foul territory taboo now and dark ages positioning? I ask this for the young guys. Also for the young guys, if moving into foul is still acceptable, in a 2 man, with nobody on and an overthrow, you would have to bust into the infield behind the runner on an overthrow if the plate guy stays with the ball. If the plate guy tells you to take the ball, then he has the runner to 2nd, since he can be in fair territory coming up the line and already be ahead of the runner.
  15. So - and I say this as an alumni - he wasn't really very good then, eh? Boy your tough on the alumni. Hmmm. seems like Johnny Oates went to VT, but of course it looks like they were Gobblers back then. Looks like Joe Sanders and Franklin Stubbs were Hokies.
  16. Great backup by the HPU since the 1BU had the ball but did not have to go far from the bag making them closer than normal, but still the PU having the play in front of him versus the 1BU having to turn with the throw and possibly being straight lined without the maneuverability the PU could use if needed. But, what Horse manure baseball from a guy making 14 million who cannot even catch the ball and a 24 million batter who cannot even run the ball out and be standing on 2nd like you are taught in LL. And then to get caught off the bag and make an out. Worse than any umpire mistakes so far including the home run and a rule. 3 errors on 1 play, with the missed catch, dogging the play and then getting caught off the bag. And this is pro ball. Are these guys getting sent down. Are they giving the fans their money back. Worse than Little League on this play. Do we need robot players that can catch and run and hustle. When are they going to hold these guys accountable??????
  17. Look at :44 for those who may have to work a 4 man for the first time. 3BU is getting into HOK position to watch for tag up, and 2BU from outfield had to get on his horse to go to 1st base for anything there (remember the other post where the 1B caught the runner on a wide turn that turned into a time-play). Although no play materialized, if this had ended up a short hop catch/no catch or the ball dropped and the fielder picked it up real quick, that 2BU would have the call at 1B if the 1B cut the throw to get the BR on the turn at first and hoping the runner from 3rd dogs it on the time play. Many times a lot of movement is absolutely essential for all members of the crew even though the play that could happen never materializes. That haul from the outfield to 1st for that backdoor play on a wide turn is one tough puppy to make, at least to be near the cutout at 1B. B position might be the best one could do.
  18. Nice article. Now go run up and down the drillfield 50 times then around the duckpond 50 times, then go shake the hand of the 4th winningest D1 BB coach (and College hoops referee)(retired) and have a cold drink. (amazing what one can google).

    Forced Balk?

Oops. I made my comment under the wrong post #8 of yours rather than Post #1 Post #8 first paragraph is good solid baseball. The 3 paragraphs here #13 are all good solid baseball you are playing. Nothing was wrong with stealing home with a left-hander throwing from a windup. Teaching your players to pitch from the set position rather than the windup with runners on third is good coaching. Here is the paragraph from your post #1 that I want you to expound on and brought on my original comments and ire. "Visitors down 1 in top of last inning. R3. R3 begins running back and forth, trying to cause a balk. 3BC gets involved yelling, getting F1's attention, forcing a balk. PU calls balk and tying run scores. Tie game in bottom of inning, 2 outs. R3. 3BC of home team starts yelling "Balk!" F1, thinking he has balked becomes frustrated and spikes the ball and his glove. Balk called. Game over. Why do you (not you personally but so many of you guys do crap like this) guys do this??????? Don't hold back, this is not the time to give the fraternity of the coaches answer to my question.
  20. Speaking for myself on my comments, none of my dissertation should be seen as an excuse, as there is no excuse, but I do not want anyone thinking, and I am not saying anyone is, that this cannot happen at the highest level and I will continually point out that all mistakes, excusable or not are being played out all over the US at all speeds of play. IMHO it does not become any more excusable or inexcusable at any speed of play.
  21. You would be surprised how many professional umpires at all levels (professional means taking money to umpire no matter the speed of play) have out and out missed a rule. Many times their explanation (and no they are not BSing the coach) makes sense and not a word is said. The umpire goes home and now he has egg on his face and he just hopes the coach doesn't have that play happen again for a while. The umpire never admits their mistake to anyone, and there for nobody ever finds out about the totally unexplainable misapplication of the rule occurred. Now, amongst umpires who will out and out tell on themselves and their rule mistakes, once again it might surprise you. Some may have got caught right on the spot and got out of it like this crew could have if they had listened to Scosia and ruled his way, (but that still does not excuse having to have the Manager tell them the rule), and some may have found out later. The guy I ran into that went to the umpire school said you wouldn't believe the guys who had experience (and were pros making money) missed the IFF rule, missed the awarding of bases rule, especially runner on first and a line drive to 2nd and trying to double up the runner going back to first and over throw into the dugout. The umpires would say going back to first was one base and awarding 2nd was the 2 base award. Many coaches think that is the rule also. On overthrows from the pitcher on pick offs, umpires were only giving 1 base when the pitcher clearly stepped back off the rubber and it goes on and on. Should anyone ever make a mistake on the rules???? or should mistakes only be on judgement calls. What about umpires who know the book backwards and forwards but cannot umpire their way out of a wet paper bag. Should they be promoted for only their rule knowledge. Since they know all the rules, should they ever make a judgement mistake. Anyway, it happened and the umpires are being graded on everything and are under a micro scope. IMHO, right now the umpire is beating himself up inside and ummercifully criticizing himself and there is absolutely no way he can ever right the wrong. This could very well cost this umpire a chance for the playoffs at the end of the year. This call could very well define his entire career, (fair or unfair) just like it did Larry Barnett on the Armbrister play, Don Dekinger in the 1985 WS, Jim Joyce on the No hitter and the list goes on and these were only judgment calls although Barnett did have a rule interpretation situation with the scramble/unscramble. Many things happen on the field to Managers, players, and umpires, that many would say should never ever happen but they do. They just have to live with it and move on just like everyone in real life has to deal with life and move on.
  22. Here is that webpage: http://factsanddetails.com/japan.php?itemid=771 The other things that happen to umpires in Japan will startle you. Take a look at that page. That was where I took the quote from. Don't worry, I have read several stories and seen several video's. Actually back in 1996 the US and Japan made an umpire agreement. In 1997 Mike DiMuro was sent to umpire. He was brought back after an incident and it appears the bad blowback (i.e. national attention) from that incident inspired Japan to look into their lack of respect for umpires (google DiMuro in Japan or the Washington Post for the old article. Hiroshi Takahashi was working here in the US. Although he tried to be polite, he has mentioned that the umpires are not treated as favorably there in the Japanese pro league as they are in the US pro leagues. Here is one you have probably seen, but you can watch it again. Cheers.
  23. Well, here another article http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2013/05/10/umpires-suspenion-fieldin-culbreth-angel-hernandez/2151799/ before long we will have this (quote found elsewhere) "Japanese umpires sometimes have conferences that last up to 30 minutes and then reverse the call with the head umpire getting on the public address system and explaining the call and apologizing to the fans".
  24. I would imagine for you guys who get to see pitchers that have command of this type pitch on the inside corner, it is fun to see the batters knees buckle, at which point he has no chance but to hope the umpire calls the pitch a ball.

    Forced Balk?

Why do we even have to go there with you coaches (not necessarily you TN if you do not subscribe to this type of coaching). Why don't you guys just play the game. Why do you try and cheat to make a player balk?? What is this showing and teaching our kids about life. Squeaky wheel gets the oil, I only want an unfair advantage, only the little people pay taxes, win any way you can as long as you can get away with it(Durocher), nice guys finish last. Do you use this moment to teach your kids that this is not how you will coach and why. What is it with you guys????? Guess you guys all feel so great and good about yourselves and can pump out your chest's and talk about what great coaches you are and what great examples to the kids you are when you do these type of things, and what a wimp and bad coach and loser the other coach is because he refuses to use this type tactic to win a game. It's all about winning in life. You are either a winner or a loser. Winner's do what I did, loser's just lose. I guess you go home feeling proud of yourselves. I hope you don't mind that IMHO coaches like this are not a role model to me. Guess that makes me a loser.
