Also, if I could give any advice to young umpires, I would tell them that you will go a lot farther and develope more respect if you try to be more practical than technical in the game. I have learned the hard way about this. When I first started umpiring and more so after I finished Professional Umpire School, I thought I knew everything and no one could tell me different. I went by the rule book like I go by the Bible. Sometimes there are situations where you have to be practical about situations and not just read it black and white. Other umpires and coaches appreciate that more than you will ever know. Yes, you are in charge but being approachable and managing the game with others in mind will help you build a reputation of a good umpire with people skills and great character. We are there to manage the game, not to show everyone we are there to prove how much we know and how much control we have. Thanks.

So, assuming the pitcher does not freeze on the call of "Balk," and immediately turns and throws the ball away, you would let play continue? In other words, I don't see how/why anyone calling an OBR game would call "Time" if this happened. In reality, Jocko is right - everyone will freeze up and then you can easily stop play and enforce the balk. But I just want to be covered for the one time that does not happen. The ball is dead because you can't meet the conditions to ignore the balk. In order for OOP awards to come into play you would have to ignore the balk. That can't be done since there was no pitch to the batter, thus he can not advance a base, and negate the balk. Call the balk, watch the throw from F1 go OOP, enforce the balk. Throw in your "time" mechanic and move to your new position if necessary.

This is wrong in a few ways.1. A throw from the rubber is one base. This is irrelevant, because2. An illegal feint from the rubber is an immediate dead ball.The move described was not a throw from the rubber, it was a third-to-first; why is the feint an immediate dead ball?I agree the ball becomes dead, but not by rule. F1 feints, we holler balk. Everyone freezes looking at us. Now we call time and award bases, since playing action has ceased. Not a hair worth splitting, but the result will be the same. Assuming we're not talking Fed, that is.

I have been buying most of my umpire and officiating gear from Dick Honig in Ann Arbor for 23 years now. I have spent thousands of dollars in umpire gear as i buy for alot of the umpires here in Toronto. I have never had a problem with Honigs. To me they give me the best service . I am very happy with the quality of merchandise and the pricing and to me their service is the best. Terry Ringer at Officials Call in West Virginia is also very good in customer service, pricing and quality. I called Ump Attire few months back to order the wilson replacement pads they had on sale. I spoke to three people and i couldnt get any of them to tell me the weight of the pads. I called Ann Arbor Honigs and in two minutes i got the weight of the wilson pads and the team wendy pads and honigs brand of pads. All i can say is, i know this site is very pro Ump Attire and negative towards Honigs... To each their own. I will continue to patronage Honigs and Official Call for the majorityof my officiating needs. And to those who are happy with Ump Attire continue to patronage them. Take fellow blue.. While I don't disagree, the time to sharpen the axe is when you don't need the firewood yet. Other camps are offseason (both of Tony's, MidAm, Tx, TUS, HWUS, JEUA to name a few). Just sayin...

Few innings of a college scrimmage tonight. Three-man, U1, two missed balls on pickoff attempts...ended up being a wicket. The poly-wools got a glancing blow to the inseam. #GoodThingForCompressionShorts

OFF INTERP 186-265: THURSTON: If the umpires err in not calling an infield fly, when the play is over, they must "get the play right":(1) The batter is out; (2) runners keep any bases they made on their own; and (3) if the defense puts out any baserunner, that out is canceled. Thurston agreed with Fitzpatrick: "Under no circumstances should the defense get a double play because the umpire failed to declare the infield fly." (phone call to cc, 2/29/00)

I'll make this real easy for the argumentative types: If you live in a warm weather state (ie, Texas or Florida), and you wait until freaking February to place your order for embroidered uniforms, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Period.

Guys-you order items that require embroidery at their very busiest time of the year. They are slammed with HUNDREDS OF THE SAME ORDERS. You had all winter to place an order to beat the rush and you waited until the last minute....and you are mad at them! Geez. I promise they aren't sitting around laughing at the dust collecting on your PO, and will ship it ASAP. The Honigs hating on here is so ridiculous-maybe next time don't procrastinate?

After seeing Hickman's pictures I'm kind of wishing I would have gotten the black/white plate shoes. It is a lot of white but they look pretty sweet.

Passing can only occur on a fair batted ball. If there is a chance of the ball being foul you announce the passing then wait for the status of the ball to be determined. Once the the status is determined you then make the call. In the event that a fly ball is caught and you have a passing infraction, the runners must still retag their original base. The wording of the question is poor. I don't make the out call until the status is determined. That requires the fly ball either being touched or landing in fair territory. Although you wait for the status of the ball to be determined, if the ball is fair, the out occurs at the time of the passing. This is a time play.

You still need to point out and call the obstruction immediately in Fed. You just wait to call time until the play is over. Then award the BR first base.

Then have them do the plate. Or stop their game whore attitude. If they want 7 games then they should do their share of plates and compromise their integrity to keep the games on time
