  1. For those of you in the Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia area, I stopped at a 2nd hand sports store and found some items you might be interested in Playback Sports ( 2621 N Proctor St, Tacoma, WA 98407 ) Wilson Platinum: $80 - looks nearly new as the (original) padding shows little to no wear. Honig's lightweight pullover, black with power blue: $20 8 +/- pairs of pants, various sizes and a few navy shirts at least 1 pair of shoes - I didn't check the size
  2. Would the AC grabbing her belt and pulling her back to the circle be considered assisting the runner?
  3. Welcome - I too started "late" when around 47 - going on 6 years now. I tell the new guys the first years check (at least) goes into your gear, at least up in the PNW. Hook up with one of the local associations: PBUA - Portland Baseball Umpires WCUA - Washington County Umpires Assoc EBUA - Evergreen Baseball Umpires Assoc (in Vancouver, WA that I work with) One or more also puts ads on Craigslist around Jan/Feb each year - just search umpire There is also a Wendelstedt Umpire Clinic coming to Hillsboro in Feb 2017. Might be a good start for $150 before you pick up too many bad habits. http://www.umpireschool.com/northwest-classic
  4. *F2 Name* If you pull the pitch, you didn't think it was a strike so why should I? Stick it and hold it for a second.
  5. For something in between you could try the Unequal Dome. Fits inside your hat so doesn't look out of place. You'll need to up a few sizes (3/8 +/- for fitted) and it doesn't make the hat look too odd (no like other versions made for pitchers that were mainly on the front). I did order one but wasn't totally sold if it would be comfortable enough. TBH, I didn't trim it to fit properly inside the hat just in case I wanted to send it back (which I did). Even though I didn't really give it a chance, the principles of the product seem valid. http://www.unequal.com/shop/dome
  6. 5-9 / 175 and I use the Champion P200 (w/ DeltaFlex harness) after a seeing it on a fellow umpire about your size (or maybe smaller). Hard shell that I've used for HS Varsity and 19U travel tournaments. I'm sure there are some that offer a bit more protection but I've taken foul balls off the shoulders, under arm and chest and am no worse for wear. I have no fear wearing with F1's throwing in the upper 80's. As it is the only CP I've used, I cannot speak on the others but for the price, appears to be a great value for protection / $ spent.
  7. Game: 15u Babe Ruth playing OBR Situation: R1, R2 and no outs. Batter bunts, F1 fields then over throws 3rd base. R2 comes home along with the throw from foul territory. Catcher receives the ball on the field side of the plate (not in the baseline) and has possession. He spins and reaches to put the tag down at the same time the runner is sliding in feet first (legal slide). Catchers glove comes off, runner ruled safe, but ball has been deflected by the slide into the dugout. Question: Should the award of bases be from the time of throw (2nd play by an infielder) or from the time of the play (at the plate) since the catcher had secured possession and what would this award be? Our ruling on the field was 2 bases from the time of play at the plate which, since BR had reached 2nd base, 2 more runs scored. If the ruling is from time of throw, BR should have only been awarded 3rd base.
  8. Perfect from whose perspective. Bad baseball frustrates me whether playing, watching, coaching or umpiring. 2 throws max would be perfect for all involved.
  9. Quit softball a few years ago but just started up this year with a 35 and over league. This team also does a couple of 50 and over tournaments in spring (Arizona) and fall (Vegas) that I'm looking forward to.

    Portland, OR

Check the Hillsboro Hops or the Keizer Volcanos - both Single A (and Keizer is a bit of a drive) Local Colleges - University of Portland, Portland State, Clackamas Community College, Mt. Hood CC, Clark College (in Vancouver, WA). Oregon State (Corvallis) or U of O Ducks (Eugene) for D1 if you're willing to drive a couple of hours. Not sure who might be playing at home but it's a start.

    First Var. Game

If you get the plate: Pitches will likely get to you a little sooner so set up a little earlier than usual. See the pitch into the catchers mitt. Curves and sliders will likely have a little more movement - don't give up on the pitch, see it into the mitt and good timing will help you make the right call. Check with other Varsity umpires in your association about the upper limits of their zones. It will likely be a little lower than the JV and Freshman zone. Most everything else is just baseball - usually easier as most plays will go where you expect them. The play is still nothing until you call it so slow down, see the play then make the (right) call.
  12. If you allow certain behavior with out consequence or ejection, it will most likely continue in future games. After coaching and officiating for 15 years in multiple sports, I've seen way too many young officials hang it up due to out of control coaches or parents who assume their freedom of speech trumps good sportsmanship. Most of us on here have thick enough skin to handle most anything thrown at us - it's the kid just starting out that may get this a-hole the next game. I have two boys that started reffing soccer at 14-15 y.o. and like to look at situations as if I was in the stands watching a coach do this to my (or any other) kid. If you would find it unacceptable then, it shouldn't be tolerated now. This is tempered a bit by the level of play (I'll usually give a varsity coach more rope than a 12u coach).
  13. I haven't used the Wilson Memory Foam but did take a direct shot to my TW padded mask last night. Mid-low 80's, batter swung through it, catcher never put a glove on it. Caught me square, mask stayed on, jaw was slightly sore for 1/2 and inning - all good after that. Temp in the low 50's so you've got me wondering if the Wilson Memory Foam would have been better in that situation

    Cell Phones

Never take a cell phone onto the field. With my luck, I'd figure a way to break it. I figure if someone does need to call 911, I hope at least one person in the stand would be on my side (assuming they could stop video taping what ever was going on long enough to make the call) I also have a cheap $15 soccer referee watch with a count down timer for the drop dead games.
