Question

The batter hits a slow roller in fair territory, drops the bat and runs towards first base. The ball rolls toward the bat which is lying still in the field of play across the foul line. The ball hits the top of the bat and rolls along the length of the bat ending in foul territory. The umpire calls foul ball. This is the correct ruling.

2.5.1 SITUATION E: The batter hits the ball, drops the bat and it unintentionally hits the ball a second time in (a) fair territory and is either touched by a fielder and/or comes to rest in fair territory; (b) foul territory and is either touched by a fielder and/or comes to rest in either fair or foul territory; or (c ) fair territory and is either touched by a fielder and/or comes to rest in foul territory.

RULING: In (a), the ball is fair. In (b) and (c ), the ball is foul.

The above case play applies to a moving bat moving that strikes the ball. Case Book 2.16.1 Situation D applies to the OP where the bat is lying still. In other words if ball hits the bat in foul territory and is then touched by a fielder in fair territory or comes to rest in fair territory it is a Fair Ball. Agree?

I do not agree.

If the ball hits the bat (or any other "foreign object") in FOUL, the ball is foul.

If the ball hits the bat (or any other "foreign object") in FAIR, it's nothing, yet.  The ball becomes fair or foul based on what happens next, just as if it hadn't hit the bat.

No. Once it hit the bat in foul territory it's foul.
