2.16.2 SITUATION A: B2 swings and tips the ball and a) the ball goes directly to the catcher’s glove and then rebounds to the catcher’s chest protector, then the ball is caught by the catcher; or b) the ball goes directly to the catcher’s chest protector and then is caught by the catcher. RULING: In a), the pitch is a strike and remains live. In b), this is a foul ball.

I'm not understanding A so well. It sounds as if the ball didn't go directly into the catcher's glove and STAY there, yet they're calling it a foul tip. Major divergence from OBR?

I think it's exactly the same as OBR.

A FOUL TIP is a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher’s
hands and is legally caught. It is not a foul tip unless caught and any foul tip that is caught
is a strike, and the ball is in play. It is not a catch if it is a rebound, unless the ball has first
touched the catcher’s glove or hand.

Can't access the video? But I feel stupid. I spent all last year working under the impression that any foul that did not go directly into the catcher's glove and stay they're was a dead foul ball. I'm pretty sure I didn't have any of these, but I'm prepared now I guess.

The interpretation matches OBR, in fact, I believe the FED changed it just a few years ago where only the catcher could secure a foul tip for a strikes vs a foul ball.

Now you know and that's what matters. As Evans says "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing"

The video about McCann's play has a full count, so when the foul tip is secured it is a strike and an out.

Sure would be an interesting conversation with some coaches who would want an out on the foul fly ball. I would guess that some one would probably have their ticket punched early.

Just sayin...

so does this mean in your rule book there is a LIVE foul ball?

Like a foul fly that is caught?  Yes.

Only uncaught foul balls are dead.
