I have MC on the BR. look at about :29 ( just as the mensa announcer says it was a clean play) the BR lowers his shoulder. He had access to the base. No reason for this at all. Then F3 dropping the ball in his lap didn't help but I've got nothing on that.

By rule 5-16-c the game probably should have ended in a forfeit. Virtually everybody on screed left their position to participate.

In practice not egregious enough especially at the playoff level.

EJs (IMO)

  • BR for MC
  • This TT coach - Suspension Made contact with a Miami Player
  • Miami 1BC I'm not positive given the angle but he might have made contact w TT F3
  • Miami # 13 he charged in hard.

Those who just "showed up" get to stay. But any who are judged to actively participate are gone.

The box score shows:

Game notes: Miami Asst Coach Gino DiMare ejected following top 3rd inning. Texas Tech Asst Coach J-Bob Thomas ejected following top 3rd inning. Texas Tech 1B Eric Gutierrez ejected following top 3rd inning.

I don't have a problem w/ TT F3 being EJ'd - but I can't see tossing him and not the BR.

Just a word about this part: I see what you're talking about. But it's not easy to avoid that fielder coming into your path at the last moment. That BR is not reading the fielder at all, and the fielder moves right into the middle of the base.

Lowering your shoulder by itself is nothing: there's going to be a collision here, and unless I see some "additional act" by the BR, it's just a train wreck.

@maven I can appreciate that. But, I believe the collision was not necessary and avoidable (my criteria for MC) and the BR may have been trying to protect himself by raising his arm/shoulder. He had a step and a half still.

At this point the BR is out and I feel he still had opportunity to at least avoid the contact, but chose not to. So it may qualify as an avoidable trainwreck.

I don't have MC here. I have a train wreck. I don't think the BR is able to slow himself down from full speed to avoid a collision as he was only out by a few feet. Also (i know i have replay) at the point of contact

can't figure out how to post a pic with this new computer but pause it at 0:27

initial contact appears to be with the hands in a way that suggests the BR is bracing for contact rather than initiating it.

Train wreck all day long.  In the past few posts here on these types of incidents, we keep getting the "SEE!  In the last 3 feet he veered into..."  blah blah blah.  Trust me, I know players can be incredible f*^kweasels, but there's absolutely no intent here.

Pretty hard to say who should be ejected.  I'd like to see the whole play instead of clips.

The B/R didn't do anything wrong.  I'd get in the 1B's sh!t for dumping the ball on him.  Obviously the 1st Base Coach said something and then the show was on.  Try to stop them and if you can't find your partners and start identifying participants.

And on that note...Can we please, for the love of God, understand what "participates" mean???  Participating means actually involving yourself in the fight.  It does not mean leaving your position to stand around.  It does not mean leaving the dugout to help break it up.  I continue and continue to read post after post of how everyone should be ejected and games should be forfeited because everyone left their positions to "participate".  If they're out there mingling around or trying to help break it up, they aren't participating.  Do you really expect players to stay in the dugout or at their position on the field and watch?

Thank you .  I've been wondering the same thing -- but note that other levels (and the NCAA rule on fighting in other sports) are different.  Don't bring that mentality to the NCAA baseball game.

There were two JUCO teams near my area involved in what the conference called a "bench clearing situation."  Basically, the catcher said something to the batter, the batter got in the catchers face.  Both coaches came out and got in between the players, and all of the players from their dugouts came out about 15 feet to see what was going on, then went back.  No punches, nothing else said.  Both teams then had to forfeit two games, as the players were "suspended for participating in a fight."

Interesting definition of a fight.
