12u LL local league championship game.  Score tied 1-1.  Home run hit over fence scores 2 runs.

Team comes to celebrate at plate and batter never touches home plate.

Umpire negates homerun and no runs scored.

Controversy erupts from coach and stands.

Would you have called the no-touch at the plate?

One run should have scored.  Yes, I would've called the no touch by the batter/runner if properly appealed but it wouldn't have mattered because abandonment is a time play so the score should still be 2-1.  In reality, in little league, (which I don't work) I would've yelled "back up, back up" and backed the kids up so the player could touch home plate.

Also is it fair to assume that the out was the third out?

This game still should've been over 2-1.  Did it go extra innings or end in a tie?

Can you clarify?  Just curious, did anyone other than the umpire see the missed touch?

First its been discussed many times here and some would and some wouldn't and for some it depends on by how much.

Second its not the umpires call to make he needs to wait for an appeal.

Third since the first runner touched it doesn't really matter what the batter did as long as he touched first base.

Does any league still use the umpire self appeal?

Yes.  HS in SC or NC (I can never remember which)

South Carolina, the palmetto state. Officially, their state language is English, though you wouldn't necessarily know it when you speak with them. :P maven

The team that got the home run taken away ended up winning 5-1.

I wasn't at the game but several friends in the league were keeping me up to date on what was happening as I was at my own game.  I don't know if anyone else didn't see the touch.

But at the time, the two run-homer was a make or break score for that team.

Not sure I'm looking forward to the day when I make a call that holds that much weight or creates so much controversy.

That's a dirty stick.... wouldn't want to touch it unless i absolutely had to (let the D appeal)

The job is full of "big calls" and controversy.  Consider that if you want to make a hobby of umpiring.  The key is to know your rule book and bust your butt out there to build credibility.

If you saw the player miss the plate and you were certain he did not touch it and it was properly appealed how would you not call it? That's not a poopy end of a pole. That's doing your job. If the umpire had maintained control of the area around the plate the call is either obvious or non existant. #Game management
