Hey, at least he took his mask off with his left hand.

All umpire commercials drive me crazy.  You'd think they might research the topic just a bit before making them.

Not as much as Smitty wearing his pants to the ballpark.

Sometimes, when its has rained and the parking lot will be wet, this Smitty even wears his plate shoes to the field

Does this commercial drive anyone else bonkers?

No because I don't really give a damn what they put on commercials.  And its the same for all industries that are shown in commercials - If you are in that industry you see all the problems with the commercials.

I always assumed (my first mistake) that companies that hire major firms to produce advertising would want the best, and the ad firm would do their due diligence in researching whatever they're trying to accomplish ........

guess not :shakehead:  :TD:

The conclusion I can draw is that people aren't really paying attention to the dress and actions of the umpires.  So, the makers of these commercials (and their clients) see these commercials as accurate.  It's the gorilla / bouncing ball (selective attention) video, as mentioned in another current post.

Are we umpires the only ones that care about the dress and incidental actions of the umpires?????

Well the focus is on the product, not our specialty group.  To 99% of the people watching the commercial they probably don't notice a thing.  Only the junkies on here!

We all have been spoiled by Jimmy Hughes, the greatest TV umpire ever!

If he'd just have his hat on right, I could deal with it.

I try to get this point across all the time to umpires in my area: No one came to watch you and most people couldn't tell you what color shirt an umpire was wearing after the game.  I try telling them the next time a runner it out by 30 feet at 1st base to end the inning, don't make a call and watch what happens...1 team will leave the field, 1 team will take the field, and the game will continue without you making a call.

You all have yet to see the greatest insult to the baseball umpiring community...................an independent film called "The Umpire" starring Charlotte Ross.....

The plot of which is this:

When professional baseball's only female umpire, Billie Satriano, is asked to investigate the disappearance of a senior umpire suspected of corrupt activities, she finds herself torn between her family of officials and the game she so loves. In navigating through this dilemma, Billie's focused gaze - a gaze solely occupied by the events between the baselines - is not only called into question and her career placed in jeopardy, but her own life will hang in the balance..

beyond bizarre......only good thing is that it probably wont be seen.....

a ridiculousl short and uninformative trailer is available at www.charlotteross.com

If I'm running late, I'll wear my pants, plate shoes, and cup to the field. Just less I have to put on once I get there and saves time.
